Position Overview

The City of Edmonton is dedicated to fostering a diverse workforce that mirrors the community we serve. This role is part of our initiative to recruit Indigenous Peoples into our team.

As a Cultural Heritage Interpreter, you will serve as a storyteller, educator, and representative of Indigenous cultures. Your role will involve sharing the rich histories and traditions of Indigenous Peoples, creating meaningful experiences for visitors and residents alike.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engage audiences with narratives and cultural insights related to Indigenous Peoples, specifically within the context of Edmonton's historical experiences.
  • Utilize various interpretive techniques, including storytelling, demonstrations of traditional practices, and interactive discussions to convey historical significance.
  • Lead and participate in large-scale educational programs, including historical presentations and community events, while also developing new initiatives.
  • Support the execution of high-profile events and assist in the upkeep of artifacts and educational materials.
  • Gather and analyze visitor engagement data.
  • Facilitate programs for school groups and other organizations as needed.
  • Represent the organization at public events and media engagements.

Qualifications:

  • Completion of secondary education or equivalent.
  • Experience in public engagement, particularly with children and diverse audiences.

Preferred Skills:

  • Proficiency in Indigenous languages such as Cree or Michif, and familiarity with Cree syllabics.
  • Background in museum, cultural center, or historical site operations.

Essential Skills:

  • Expertise in traditional crafts and cultural practices.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Indigenous cultures and histories.
  • Commitment to principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Employment Conditions:

  • Current Intermediate First Aid and CPR certification is required prior to starting the role.
  • Employment is contingent upon a satisfactory Police Information Check.

Work Environment:

  • Weekly work hours are subject to review and may be adjusted in accordance with organizational agreements.
