Job Summary: We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Director of Legislation to lead our Legislation Division in the Government of Northwest Territories.

About the Role: As the Director of Legislation, you will be responsible for overseeing the preparation and publication of Government Bills, Private Members Bills, regulations, statutory instruments, and appointments. You will also be responsible for the consolidation of legislation and providing advice on legislation and statutory interpretation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the Legislation Division: As the administrative head of the Division, you will be responsible for directing a team of legislative counsel and legal translators in providing legislative drafting services to the Government and the Legislative Assembly.
  • Prepare and Publish Legislation: You will be responsible for preparing and publishing Government Bills, Private Members Bills, regulations, statutory instruments, and appointments in English and French.
  • Consolidate Legislation: You will be responsible for consolidating legislation and ensuring that it is up-to-date and accurate.
  • Provide Advice: You will provide advice on legislation and statutory interpretation to the Government and the Legislative Assembly.

Requirements:

  • Education: A Common Law Degree is required.
  • Experience: Five (5) or more years of experience practicing law with experience as a dedicated legislative counsel and managing lawyers is an asset.
  • Membership: Membership to a Canadian Law Society is required.
