ROLE SUMMARY

As a vital member of the Strategic Communications team at the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS), the Public Relations Coordinator plays a key role in promoting and enhancing awareness of CCS's mission to external stakeholders. Reporting to the Senior Communications Manager, this position is responsible for developing and implementing communication strategies that highlight the impact of our programs, services, and advocacy efforts. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, content creation, project management, media monitoring, analysis, and managing both proactive and reactive media relations. A particular focus will be on communications initiatives supporting the expanded Cancer Travel and Accommodation Services (CTAAS) in British Columbia.

This position is well-suited for a results-oriented communicator with strong project management capabilities, a solid grasp of communication principles, and experience in media relations, particularly within the media landscape of British Columbia and Canada.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist in executing communication strategies and tools that align with organizational priorities, focusing on travel and transportation services in British Columbia.
  • Plan and implement media relations and public relations strategies as needed.
  • Collaborate with brand marketing and digital engagement teams to support marketing and social communications efforts.
  • Engage with internal stakeholders to create a variety of compelling communication materials, including press releases, key messages, fact sheets, speeches, presentations, and digital content.
  • Support the writing and editing of various mission-related materials, including reports, speaking notes, presentations, and social media content.
  • Manage content approvals and distribution among internal and external stakeholders in a timely and professional manner.
  • Serve as a media contact for CCS, assisting with media inquiries, supporting spokespeople, and tracking media outcomes.
  • Conduct media monitoring and reporting for CCS, proactively identifying emerging issues or opportunities in the news cycle.
  • Respond to public inquiries promptly and professionally, collaborating with internal experts for accurate information.
  • Post content to relevant platforms as required.
  • Provide additional support to the Strategic Communications team as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field, with 3 to 5 years of experience in media relations or communications, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Positive, proactive attitude with the ability to work independently and contribute to a collaborative team culture.
  • Demonstrated experience in communication strategies and tactics, including media and public relations.
  • Strong understanding of the media landscape, particularly in British Columbia.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong editing abilities and attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational, project management, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated flexibility, resourcefulness, and resilience, with the ability to deliver quality results under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain positive relationships.
  • Proven ability to present creative solutions to challenges and manage issues effectively.
  • Excellent written, listening, and oral communication skills.
  • Experience with media monitoring tools and reporting.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools, including PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and SharePoint.
  • Video production experience is a plus.
  • Bilingualism in French and English is an asset.
  • Experience in a health-related environment, cancer organization, or non-profit setting is advantageous.
  • Experience in advocacy, public policy, or government relations communication is a plus.
