JOB OVERVIEW

The Homes for Independence Program provides supportive living arrangements for youth. Reporting to the Manager of Phoenix Homes for Independence, the Residential Support Specialist serves as a consistent, positive role model while residing on-site with the youth. This position focuses on supporting female-identifying youth in a shared living environment, assisting with case plans, managing household activities, and engaging with residents. The Residential Support Specialist may also hold a secondary job or pursue educational opportunities alongside their responsibilities.

COMPENSATION PACKAGE

The role includes complimentary accommodation and utilities, a monthly honorarium, opportunities for professional development, and scheduled time off. Basic furnishings are provided for the living space.

SCREENING CRITERIA

Candidates must undergo a thorough background check, including a criminal record assessment, vulnerable sector screening, child abuse registry verification, and proof of educational qualifications.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist youth in daily activities, providing supervision and encouragement as necessary, particularly in navigating household dynamics.
  • Oversee home maintenance tasks, participate in household chores, and report any necessary repairs.
  • Familiarize yourself with and monitor the youth's short- and long-term objectives as they transition to independent living.
  • Provide therapeutic support and crisis intervention as needed.
  • Organize regular house meetings and develop monthly programming.
  • Engage in broader programming and community celebrations.
  • Contribute to program development through participation in team meetings and communication with the Phoenix Homes for Independence team.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and ensure confidentiality.
  • Attend youth support meetings and keep current case notes.
  • Report regularly to the Homes for Independence Program team during scheduled meetings.
  • Liaise with community support services, such as educational institutions, healthcare providers, and social workers.
  • Ensure alignment with Phoenix's mission, vision, and values.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A degree or diploma in a relevant field (or in progress) along with two years of experience working or volunteering with youth.
  • At least two years of experience living independently or in a communal setting.
  • Ability to serve as a positive role model for youth in transition.
  • Strong organizational skills and effective communication abilities.
  • High energy, adaptability, and a commitment to teamwork.
  • Understanding of youth development and the complexities surrounding homelessness.
  • Proficiency in anti-oppressive practices, including harm reduction and client-centered approaches.
  • Knowledge of mental health challenges, substance use issues, and crisis intervention strategies.
  • Capability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Certification in CPI Non-violent Crisis Intervention, Standard First Aid, Naloxone administration, and ASIST Suicide Intervention is required or must be obtained shortly after starting the position.
  • Registration or candidacy for registration with a relevant professional body (if applicable).
