JOB OVERVIEW

The Homes for Independence Program is designed to provide supportive living arrangements for youth. Reporting to the Manager of Phoenix Homes for Independence, the Live-in Support Worker serves as a consistent and positive role model while residing on-site with the youth. This position focuses on supporting female-identifying youth in a shared living environment, where the Live-in Support Worker assists with case management, facilitates household activities, and engages with the residents. Candidates may maintain a secondary job or pursue educational opportunities alongside their live-in responsibilities.

COMPENSATION PACKAGE

The compensation includes complimentary accommodation and utilities, a monthly honorarium, and opportunities for professional development, along with designated days off each month. Basic furnishings will be provided.

SCREENING CRITERIA

This role requires a satisfactory background check, including a criminal record check, vulnerable sector search, child abuse registry check, and verification of educational qualifications.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist youth in their daily routines, providing supervision and encouragement as necessary, particularly in managing household dynamics.
  • Oversee home maintenance tasks, including the distribution of household chores and reporting any required repairs.
  • Familiarize yourself with and monitor the youths' goals as they progress towards independent living.
  • Provide therapeutic support and crisis intervention when needed.
  • Organize regular house meetings and facilitate monthly programming.
  • Engage in broader program initiatives and community celebrations.
  • Contribute to program development by attending team meetings and maintaining communication with the Phoenix Homes for Independence team.
  • Ensure proper documentation is completed and confidentiality is upheld.
  • Attend youth support meetings regularly and maintain updated case notes.
  • Report to the Homes for Independence Program team during scheduled meetings.
  • Occasionally collaborate with other community resources, such as educational institutions, healthcare providers, and social services.
  • Ensure that the program aligns with Phoenix's mission, vision, and values.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A degree or diploma in a relevant field (may be in progress) along with two years of experience working or volunteering with youth.
  • At least two years of experience living independently or in a communal setting.
  • Ability to serve as a positive role model for youth in transition.
  • Strong organizational skills coupled with effective oral and written communication abilities.
  • High energy, adaptability, and a commitment to teamwork.
  • Understanding of youth development and the complexities surrounding homelessness.
  • Proficiency in anti-oppressive practices, including harm reduction and client-centered approaches.
  • Knowledge of mental health challenges, substance use issues, and crisis intervention strategies.
  • Capacity to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Certification in CPI Non-violent Crisis Intervention, Standard First Aid, Naloxone administration, and ASIST Suicide Intervention is required, or a willingness to obtain these certifications promptly after starting.
  • Registration or candidacy for registration with a relevant professional body (if applicable).
