Role Overview

As a Site Reliability Engineer (SRE), your primary responsibility will be to ensure the seamless operation of all internal services and platforms. SREs are a unique blend of system administrators and software engineers who apply robust engineering principles, operational discipline, and advanced automation to our infrastructure services.

Our team focuses on enhancing automation, improving infrastructure reliability, and empowering other engineering teams at Braze to effectively utilize the products and platforms we develop. With over 3.3 billion monthly active users and the processing of vast amounts of data, we operate at an impressive scale, utilizing a diverse technology stack that includes Ruby on Rails, MongoDB, Redis, Kafka, and Kubernetes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with engineering teams to:
  • Design products that effectively leverage infrastructure platforms for scalability and reliability.
  • Troubleshoot reliability and scalability challenges across all layers of the stack.
  • Implement monitoring and alerting systems focused on symptoms rather than outages.
  • Ensure compliance with our stringent enterprise-grade SLAs.
  • Enhance Braze's internal platform infrastructure by:
  • Creating Infrastructure as Code using tools like Chef, Terraform, and Kubernetes.
  • Developing deployment pipelines for applications across various programming languages.
  • Providing essential tooling, services, and automation frameworks to streamline operations and improve workflow.
  • Manage incidents by:
  • Participating in a PagerDuty rotation to address availability incidents.
  • Utilizing on-call shifts to proactively prevent incidents.
  • Conducting retrospectives to transform lessons learned into system enhancements.

Who You Are

  • 3+ years of experience in Software Engineering, DevOps, or Site Reliability Engineering.
  • Possess a strong understanding of systems, including interfaces, boundaries, and failure modes.
  • Exhibit a collaborative spirit and a commitment to documentation and rapid delivery.
  • Comfortable working with global remote teams, often asynchronously.
  • Detail-oriented, ensuring knowledge is shared to avoid redundancy.
  • Proactive in addressing issues and committed to improving the experience for all users.
  • Strong multitasking abilities and adept at managing competing priorities.
  • Proficient in Linux and Unix Shell environments.
  • Skilled in programming, preferably in Ruby and/or Go.
  • Experienced with Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, and similar Infrastructure as Code technologies.
  • Familiar with data technologies such as MongoDB, Redis, Kafka, and Postgres.
