Role & Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate proficiency in radiation detection techniques and the application of radionuclide scaling factors, alongside a clear understanding of various nuclear waste processing methods.
  • Interpret analytical results, summarize conclusions effectively, and make informed decisions regarding waste consignment and disposal routes. As a senior specialist, identify statistical anomalies, analyze complex issues, and propose logical solutions and recommendations.
  • Provide technical guidance and support the development of a skilled team in Waste Characterization.
  • Offer expert advice within the organization and on commercial opportunities.
  • Exhibit strong technical writing abilities to produce detailed reports on complex subjects.
  • Stay updated on the latest technological and scientific advancements in the field, recommending improvements to Waste Characterization processes for enhanced service delivery.
  • Utilize strong communication skills to educate and influence diverse audiences, including operational staff, clients, vendors, and management.
  • Act as a subject matter expert to ensure successful execution of contracted scopes of work.
  • Possess knowledge of Waste Management principles, including the waste hierarchy and its application.
  • Understand Radiation Protection Principles and contamination control measures relevant to work activities.
  • Achieve a minimum Group 3 certification while in the role.
  • Familiarity with various radiation measurement instruments and analytical techniques, understanding their limitations and data interpretation.
  • Possess a strong knowledge of waste characterization techniques and industry best practices, including US EPA Data Quality Objectives (DQO) Process and MARSSIM principles.
  • Understand Canadian Standards Association N292, Canadian Nuclear Safety Act Regulations, IAEA Standards, and relevant provincial regulations.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Honours Bachelor Degree in Engineering or Science from a recognized university or membership in a professional organization authorized to establish qualifications.
  • Background in mathematics (statistics), radiochemistry, radiological engineering, or health physics is a significant asset.
  • A minimum of 8 years of experience in nuclear operations, particularly in Waste Management, including waste hierarchy concepts, Waste Characterization, Environmental remediation, Waste Acceptance Criteria, and Transportation of Dangerous Goods.
