Unit Overview

The Hamilton Regional Laboratory Medicine program (HRLMP) operates as a collaborative initiative, jointly funded and managed by Hamilton Health Sciences and St. Joseph's Healthcare. This program is dedicated to fostering innovation and transformation through education, service, and research, ensuring the highest quality of scientific practice is integrated into healthcare for community benefit, while also engaging in the clinical application and interpretation of scientific findings.

Role Overview

Reporting to the Special Hematology Manager or their designate, the Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) plays a crucial role in executing Hematology tests and procedures in alignment with HRLMP's established policies and protocols. Responsibilities encompass a range of testing activities, including but not limited to: Hematology morphology, bedside bone marrow preparation, specialized staining techniques, and cell marker analysis using flow cytometry technology. The MLT is also responsible for the operation and maintenance of laboratory instruments, conducting quality control and assurance processes, contributing to the adoption of new methodologies, and demonstrating a commitment to ongoing professional development. Additionally, the MLT is expected to engage courteously and tactfully with colleagues, patients, the public, and other healthcare personnel. The role may also involve additional responsibilities such as teaching, method evaluation, technical documentation, and participation in quality assurance initiatives.

Work Schedule

This position requires flexibility to work days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Qualifications

1. Current Registration with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO)
2. Successful completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Technologist program
3. Proven experience and knowledge in Hematology morphology
4. Familiarity with flow cytometry and specialized staining techniques, as well as bedside marrow preparation
5. Proficient computer skills in Order Entry, Data Entry, and Reporting
6. Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving abilities
7. Demonstrated commitment to enhancing personal competence and contributing to the education and development of peers and students.
