Unit Overview

The Hamilton Regional Laboratory Medicine program (HRLMP) is a joint initiative supported by Hamilton Health Sciences and St. Joseph's Healthcare. This program is dedicated to innovation and transformation through education, service, and research, aiming to integrate the highest quality scientific practices into healthcare for community benefit while engaging in the clinical application and interpretation of scientific findings.

Role Overview

Reporting to the Special Hematology Manager or designated personnel, the Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) plays a crucial role in executing Hematology tests and procedures in line with HRLMP's established policies and protocols. Responsibilities encompass, but are not limited to: conducting Hematology morphology assessments, bedside bone marrow preparations, applying special stains, and utilizing flow cytometry technology for cell marker identification. The MLT is also responsible for the operation and upkeep of laboratory instruments, executing quality control and assurance protocols, engaging in the adoption of new methodologies and evaluations, and demonstrating a commitment to ongoing professional development. Furthermore, the MLT is expected to interact courteously and tactfully with colleagues, patients, the public, and other healthcare staff. The role may also involve additional responsibilities such as teaching, method evaluation, technical documentation, and participation in quality assurance initiatives.

Work Schedule

The position requires flexibility to work days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Qualifications

1. Current Registration with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO)
2. Successful completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Technologist program
3. Proven experience and knowledge in Hematology morphology
4. Familiarity with flow cytometry and special staining techniques, as well as bedside marrow preparation methods
5. Proficient computer skills in Order Entry, Data Entry, and Reporting
6. Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving abilities
7. A demonstrated commitment to personal competence enhancement and contributing to the education and development of peers and students.
