About the Role

Canadian Blood Services is in search of a Regular Part-time Cord Blood Nursing Specialist to join our dynamic Stem Cells team.

The Stem Cells team plays a crucial role in supporting Canadian Blood Services by managing several programs aimed at improving outcomes for patients suffering from various diseases and disorders treatable through stem cell transplants, including leukemia, lymphoma, aplastic anemia, and inherited immune and metabolic disorders.

Formula for Success

  • Utilizing your exceptional interpersonal skills, you will collaborate with Cord Blood Bank (CBB) personnel to foster, develop, and maintain an environment of continuous quality enhancement in alignment with regulatory and accreditation standards, as well as customer satisfaction.
  • Employing your sensitivity, discretion, and confidentiality, you will conduct maternal interviews and evaluate responses to determine donor eligibility for cord blood donation, which includes:
    - Informed consent.
    - Medical history and health assessment questionnaire.
    - Review of hospital medical charts with associated assessments for cord blood suitability.
    - Phlebotomy to collect maternal blood samples.
  • Drawing on your phlebotomy expertise, you will perform ex-utero umbilical cord blood collection as necessary.
  • Leveraging your outstanding leadership abilities, you will provide training, support, and mentorship to the cord blood bank team and hospital partners.

Desired Education and Skills

  • Baccalaureate degree in Nursing from a recognized registered nursing program; a minimum of three to six years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the province of employment is mandatory.
  • Familiarity with adult learning principles and developed skills in design, instruction, or facilitation is advantageous.
  • Experience in Obstetrical Nursing and/or Labour and Delivery is preferred.
  • Venepuncture experience is essential.
  • The ability to exercise judgment, tact, diplomacy, and strict confidentiality is crucial.

What You Can Expect

  • Shift/Hours – Shifts are scheduled Monday to Friday, 7 am to 3 pm, including all statutory holidays that occur on weekdays. Bi-weekly hours: 37.5.
  • Physical Requirements - Ability to lift weights up to 10 kg (22 lbs).
