Position Overview
Black & McDonald is seeking a dedicated and skilled professional to fill the role of Senior Mechanical Estimator. This position plays a crucial role in our Southern Ontario operations, focusing on a diverse range of mechanical projects across various sectors including industrial, commercial, government, and institutional markets.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead a specialized team of Estimators in Mechanical ICI Construction, preparing detailed estimates of anticipated costs for materials, labor, subcontractors, and equipment based on project specifications and drawings.
  • Provide expert advice on tendering processes, evaluate and analyze bids, recommend award decisions, and facilitate negotiations.
  • Establish and uphold the tendering framework, implementing cost monitoring and reporting systems.
  • Coordinate pricing packages with suppliers, subcontractors, owners, designers, and architects throughout the tendering process.
  • Oversee site reviews, tender evaluations, project hand-offs, and operational meetings with key stakeholders.
  • Maintain an updated directory of suppliers, contractors, and subcontractors.
  • Engage with engineers, architects, and other stakeholders to prepare economic feasibility studies related to cost estimates.
  • Stay informed about industry advancements to ensure estimates reflect the latest construction methods and technologies.
  • Manage material and equipment procurement for confirmed projects.
  • Travel to various project sites as necessary.

Educational Background
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Construction Technology with relevant experience, or
  • Qualified tradesperson in the mechanical field with extensive experience and prior estimating responsibilities.
Experience Requirements
  • 15-20 years of experience as a Mechanical Estimator on ICI projects valued at $10M or more.
Skills and Abilities
  • In-depth knowledge of contract management and construction scheduling.
  • Ability to interpret mechanical drawings accurately.
  • Fluency in relevant trades such as plumbing, hydronics, and HVAC.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Proven leadership capabilities.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) designation is an asset.
  • Project management experience is advantageous.
Technical Proficiency
  • Advanced user of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Projects).
  • Familiarity with Autobid Mechanical (QuickPen) and Accubid Change Order Pro.
