Chief Estimator

About This Opportunity

Black & McDonald Limited is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Chief Estimator to join our Southern Ontario team. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for leading a team of estimators and working closely with the General Manager to deliver high-quality estimates and projects.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead a team of estimators in preparing detailed estimates for construction projects, including mechanical, industrial, commercial, and institutional markets.
• Advise on tendering procedures, examine and analyze tenders, recommend tender awards, and conduct negotiations.
• Establish and maintain tendering processes, set up cost monitoring and reporting systems, and procedures.
• Coordinate price packages with suppliers, subcontractors, owners, designers, and architects regarding tenders.
• Oversee site reviews, tender reviews, tender hand-offs, project closings, and operational meetings with the Division Manager, General Manager, Project Manager, and Purchasing as required.
• Maintain a directory of suppliers, contractors, and subcontractors.
• Liaise with engineers, architects, owners, contractors, and subcontractors to prepare economic feasibility studies on changes and adjustments to cost estimates.
• Stay up-to-date with new technology within the mechanical contracting industry to ensure estimates include the latest construction methods and procedures.
• Conduct material and equipment purchasing for secured jobs.
• Travel to various sites or clients to undertake the above responsibilities.

Education Requirements

• Graduate of a Mechanical Engineering program or Construction Technology program with related work experience.
• Qualified tradesperson in the mechanical field with several years' experience and previous estimating experience.

Work Experience Requirements

• 15-20 years of experience working as a Mechanical Estimator on ICI projects of a $10M value or higher.

Skills, Abilities, and Other Requirements

• Advanced knowledge and understanding of contract management, construction scheduling, planning, and execution.
• Ability to interpret mechanical drawings.
• Trade fluency (plumbing, hydronic, HVAC).
• Organization and time management.
• Self-driven leadership abilities.
• P.Eng. or CET would be considered an asset.
• Project management experience is an asset.

Software Requirements

• Advanced user of MS applications (Word, Excel, and Projects).
• Autobid Mechanical (QuickPen).
• Accubid Change Order Pro.
