Position Overview: The Satellite Operations Specialist will oversee and manage satellites owned by Telesat as well as those operated on behalf of other communication service providers, executing all scheduled and unscheduled tasks related to the operation of Telesat's satellites.
Main Responsibilities:
  1. Conduct all scheduled and unscheduled operations associated with Telesat's satellite fleet.
  2. Assist in the maintenance and development of Satellite Ground Control Equipment and Computer Systems.
  3. Monitor and evaluate satellite telemetry data for any anomalies and take necessary actions.
  4. Prepare, execute, and oversee all orbit and attitude maneuvers according to established protocols.
  5. Ensure precise preparation and scheduling of maneuvers and other activities as directed by Flight Dynamics and Satellite Engineering.
  6. Provide validation and report deficiencies for all Satellite Control system hardware, software, and ancillary support equipment.
  7. Identify, report, and determine appropriate responses to satellite or ground discrepancies promptly by implementing satellite emergency procedures and other specified instructions.
  8. Compile detailed reports and support documentation for all satellite discrepancies, equipment failures, software issues, and communication outages.
  9. Maintain high proficiency in using computer operating systems and programs, including specialized custom-designed software utilized in the Satellite Control Centre.
Education and Experience Required: Successful completion of a 3-year technologist diploma in Communications, Electrical, or Electronic Engineering or an equivalent qualification. Upon acceptance, the incumbent must complete a probationary period while undergoing on-the-job training.
Specialized Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  1. Strong interpersonal skills are essential as the Satellite Operations Specialist interacts extensively with personnel from Satellite Engineering, Flight Dynamics, TTAC Engineering, TCC, and similar teams from Telesat's satellite customers.
  2. The ability to remain vigilant at all hours in an environment where situational awareness and flawless operations are critical to maintaining the health of our satellite fleet.
  3. Must respond quickly and accurately to all satellite anomalies; being acutely aware of various visual and audio alarms.
  4. Continuous attention to printed text, computer screens, and verbal information from co-workers, managers, and numerous technical experts is required.
  5. Well-developed time management skills in a multi-tasking environment.
  6. Disciplined ability to engage in continuous learning through self-study and on-the-job training.
  7. Proficiency in software tools with programming and development skills considered an asset.
Equipment Used: PCs operating in a Windows environment with various applications, including but not limited to the Microsoft Office suite, Access, PowerPoint, Oracle, Visio Technical, Adobe Acrobat, and several in-house developed applications such as OpsTrak, InfoAccSys, SAS, and other scheduling software.
Decision Making and Supervision: This role does not have direct reports. The Satellite Operations Specialist is expected to evaluate incoming data and use sound judgment to make quick decisions regarding appropriate responses. Good judgment is essential for determining the nature of abnormal conditions and deciding on the necessary steps, including seeking additional support from team members and/or subject matter experts. Decisions impact the operations of critical assets.
Working Conditions: The Satellite Operations Specialist works in a collaborative team environment, expected to plan, coordinate, and prioritize tasks to ensure timely completion with minimal supervision. They must effectively manage diverse technical and administrative responsibilities and assist others as needed. Routine shift work is required to staff the Satellite Control Centre 24/7/365, typically scheduled well in advance using 12-hour shifts on a 2-2-3 rotation. Shift schedules may be adjusted to maintain minimum staffing requirements. Overtime may be required periodically. When on duty but not in the Satellite Control Centre, the Satellite Operations Specialist must carry a pager or phone and remain within a short distance of the Centre at all times.
