Position Overview
The LEO SOC Systems Specialist plays a crucial role in establishing the control framework for Telesat's cutting-edge satellite constellation. This position involves leveraging state-of-the-art software technologies to configure a high-assurance containerized satellite control environment. Collaboration with architects and satellite engineers is essential to comprehend the overall Concept of Operations (ConOps) while developing in-house containerized software solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Implement and sustain the infrastructure (on-premises cloud/containers) that supports operational systems.
- Design, monitor, and maintain the Lightspeed satellite control systems integral to Telesat's advanced LEO constellation.
- Contribute to fulfilling system requirements for all components of the satellite control systems, including real-time command and telemetry processing, flight dynamics, space situational awareness, data storage and analytics, ground encryption, constellation management, and operational automation.
- Create and manage software associated with operational systems, including spacecraft data storage, visualization tools, and automation solutions.
- Support other satellite operations teams in utilizing control systems and related functions.
- Engage in the procurement process for satellite operations systems, including acceptance testing, requirements verification, and training.
- Collaborate with the Lightspeed satellite engineering teams to ensure operational systems meet the needs of the Lightspeed constellation.
- Develop mission operations procedures for Launch and Early Operations Phase (LEOP), Orbit Raising, and In-Orbit validation, including conducting necessary training and rehearsals.
- Establish and implement robust automation of operational processes to minimize operational burdens and ensure reliable satellite operations.
- Oversee and maintain the GEO satellite operations systems currently in use for Telesat's geosynchronous fleet.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Science, or Mathematics.
- Demonstrated experience in operational systems, with a minimum of 9 years in similar roles.
- Proficiency with modern operating systems, programming languages, and frameworks.
- Experience with on-premises clusters and containerized systems.
- Familiarity with cybersecurity principles and best practices.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Fluency in English.
- Willingness to travel internationally as required, with no travel or visa restrictions.
- Ability to obtain a NATO secret security clearance.
- Availability for off-hours support as part of a call-out rotation.
- Flexibility to support projects across multiple time zones, which may require overtime.
Decision-Making and Leadership
- Self-motivated individual capable of providing recommendations and influencing Lightspeed system design.
- Evaluate operational systems solutions and make decisions based on technical assessments.
- Support operational plans and respond to anomalies as necessary.
- May provide leadership to project teams and mentor junior staff.
- This role does not include direct reports.
The successful candidate must be eligible to work in Canada and obtain clearance under the Canadian Controlled Goods Program (CGP) and NATO secret level clearance.
