The Satellite Operations Specialist will oversee and manage the functionality of satellites operated by Telesat and those serviced for various communication providers, executing both routine and exceptional tasks related to the management of Telesat's satellite fleet.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct all routine and exceptional tasks linked to the management of Telesat's satellite systems.
  • Support all scheduled and unscheduled maintenance and advancements of Satellite Ground Control Equipment and Computer Systems.
  • Analyze satellite telemetry data for unusual conditions and initiate necessary actions.
  • Prepare, implement, and supervise all orbital and attitude adjustments following established protocols.
  • Ensure precise preparation and scheduling of maneuvers and other operations as dictated by Flight Dynamics and Satellite Engineering.
  • Provide validation and report deficiencies for all Satellite Control system hardware, software, and auxiliary support tools.
  • Identify, report, and determine appropriate responses to all satellite or ground discrepancies promptly by executing necessary emergency procedures and instructions.
  • Compile detailed reports and supporting documentation for all satellite discrepancies, equipment failures, software issues, and communication disruptions.
  • Maintain high proficiency in utilizing computer operating systems and programs, including specialized custom-designed software and analysis tools employed in the Satellite Control Centre.
Required Education and Experience:
  • Completion of a 3-year technologist diploma in Communications, Electrical, or Electronic Engineering or equivalent.
  • Upon acceptance to the Satellite Control Centre, the individual must complete a probationary period while receiving on-the-job training.
Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Strong interpersonal skills are crucial as the Satellite Operations Specialist collaborates extensively with personnel from Satellite Engineering, Flight Dynamics, TTAC Engineering, TCC, and similar roles from Telesat's satellite customers.
  • The ability to remain vigilant at all times in an environment where situational awareness and flawless operations are vital for maintaining the health of the satellite fleet.
  • Must swiftly and accurately respond to all satellite anomalies, being acutely aware of various visual and audio alerts.
  • There is a continuous need to pay close attention to printed text, computer displays, and verbal information from colleagues, managers, and numerous technical experts who interact with the Satellite Control Centre daily.
  • Well-developed time management skills in a multitasking environment.
  • Disciplined capacity for continuous learning through self-study and on-the-job training.
  • Proficiency in software tools with programming and development skills considered advantageous.
Equipment Utilized:
  • PCs operating in a Windows environment, utilizing various applications including but not limited to the Microsoft Office suite, Access, PowerPoint, Oracle, Visio Technical, Adobe Acrobat, and several in-house developed applications such as OpsTrak, InfoAccSys, SAS, and other scheduling software.
  • Workstations running various in-house developed applications.
  • Advanced Satellite Control System.
Decision Making and Supervision:
  • This position has no direct reports.
  • The Satellite Operations Specialist is expected to evaluate incoming data and use sound judgment to make swift decisions regarding the appropriate response.
  • Good judgment is necessary to quickly ascertain the nature of abnormal conditions and to determine the appropriate actions, including seeking additional support from team members and/or subject matter experts.
  • Decisions made impact the operations of critical assets.
Working Conditions:
  • The Satellite Operations Specialist works within a team environment with guidance and is expected to plan, coordinate, and prioritize tasks to ensure timely completion of all assigned responsibilities with minimal supervision.
  • Satellite Operations Specialists must effectively work without direct supervision and are expected to take the initiative to manage diverse technical and administrative duties while assisting others on shift as needed.
  • Routine shift work is required to staff the Satellite Control Centre 24/7/365. Shifts are typically scheduled well in advance using 12-hour shifts on a 2-2-3 rotation. Shift schedules may be adjusted to maintain minimum staffing requirements. Overtime may be required periodically.
  • When on duty but not in the Satellite Control Centre, the Satellite Operations Specialist must carry a pager or phone and remain within a short distance of the Satellite Control Centre at all times.

The successful candidate must be eligible to work in Canada and obtain clearance under the Canadian Controlled Goods Program (CGP).
