Overview

This role is focused on enhancing the experience of first-year students within the Science Undergraduate Office by implementing innovative transition programs tailored for new Science students. The individual in this position collaborates with academic advisors, student leaders, and university personnel to foster an environment conducive to the success of new Science undergraduates. Guidance is provided to student leaders and faculty based on research and best practices in student orientation and transition activities.

Key Responsibilities

The incumbent will be responsible for facilitating First-Year Orientation initiatives by:

  • Acting as the Orientation Advisor for Science students on the Orientation Team.
  • Collaborating with other Orientation Advisors and relevant university offices to coordinate the recruitment, training, and oversight of the Orientation Team.
  • Reviewing and approving all plans and decisions made by the Orientation Team.
  • Monitoring Orientation events to ensure they are executed effectively and safely.
  • Contributing to the overall management of Orientation events alongside the Orientation Advisor team.
  • Documenting and addressing any incidents involving first-year students and orientation leaders as necessary.

The role also involves supporting additional transition programs for Science undergraduate students, including:

  • Serving as the liaison to the Student Success Office for new student transition activities, coordinating with academic leadership to align with strategic goals.
  • Coordinating the Faculty's involvement in transition events, ensuring representation from upper-year students, academic advisors, and faculty.
  • Working with advisors to assist international students in receiving appropriate orientation and support.

Collaboration and Consultation

The position requires participation in various forums and initiatives, including:

  • Providing reports to the Science Advising and Student Support Forum.
  • Engaging with the Science Strategic Engagement Team to bridge recruitment and student experience initiatives.
  • Participating in outreach events and fairs as needed.
  • Acting as a member of the National Orientation Directors Association to implement best practices in student transition.
  • Collecting engagement metrics and supporting student engagement initiatives.
  • Planning for data collection and providing recommendations to enhance student experiences.

Project Management and Assessment

The Coordinator will ensure accountability among volunteers by:

  • Setting clear expectations and deadlines within the transition planning process.
  • Maintaining comprehensive documentation outlining program goals, outcomes, and recommendations for future initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in a Science-related field or equivalent experience.
  • Two years of experience in academic advising or working with diverse student populations.
  • Familiarity with the needs of a diverse student body, including first-year, transfer, exchange, and international students.
  • Knowledge of university policies, resources, and ethical standards.
  • Proven ability to coach student staff in event management and program development.
  • Strong collaborative skills and a positive approach to teamwork.
  • Excellent strategic thinking, judgment, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines effectively.
