Position Duration: 2 years
The Manager of Co-op Student Relations plays a pivotal role in crafting a comprehensive engagement and success framework for co-op students, in partnership with leadership from Co-operative & Experiential Education, academic faculties, and the student body. This position is dedicated to fostering effective collaboration and ensuring a consistent approach to co-op student interactions. In alignment with the strategic objectives of Co-operative & Experiential Education (CEE), the Manager will devise, implement, and oversee tactical initiatives that prioritize key areas of student engagement.
This role also involves addressing the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action within the context of CEE, identifying both systemic and systematic changes that extend beyond these Calls by executing initiatives that support the Indigenous Strategic Plan of the Office of Indigenous Relations. The Manager will enhance CEE's ability to comprehend, support, and enrich the experiences of Indigenous students within co-op and work-integrated learning (WIL). As a role that directly engages with students, the Manager of Co-op Student Relations (Indigenous Focus) will cultivate relationships with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit students to collaboratively develop programming and resources that support their WIL journey. By working alongside the University community and partnering with the Office of Indigenous Relations, the Manager will spearhead strategic efforts to enhance engagement, partnerships, and outreach, thereby strengthening relationships with Indigenous students and the broader community.
Key Responsibilities
Drive Co-op Student Success
- Establish metrics and service standards to define targets and objectives.
- Ensure a thorough understanding and integration of co-op requirements across programs and faculties.
- Formulate consistent strategies and initiatives to promote skill development and self-awareness for navigating future employment and lifelong learning, in collaboration with CEE colleagues and campus partners.
- Design and implement proactive processes that enhance access, wellness, and inclusion in all aspects of CEE student interactions.
- Maintain ongoing engagement with diverse stakeholders to identify barriers and collaboratively develop sustainable processes, policies, and practices.
- Foster relationships with student organizations, societies, and governance bodies.
- Continuously refine the co-op student feedback mechanism to inform practices that enhance student engagement and learning outcomes in WIL.
Facilitate Integration of Work and Academic Learning
- Ensure CEE's engagement with the integration of co-op into student competency attainment and learning outcomes.
- Provide support for academic program evaluations and co-op feasibility assessments as necessary.
- Assist in program enhancements as required.
Leadership and Management
- Guide and oversee direct reports to ensure alignment with CEE's mission, vision, and principles.
- Equip employees with the necessary information and context to perform effectively.
- Recruit, develop, and retain qualified staff.
- Set clear goals and expectations, facilitating pathways to success for employees.
- Cultivate effective team dynamics and ensure cross-training for capacity management.
- Manage performance through formal and informal feedback mechanisms.
- Identify development opportunities for team members and co-create development plans.
Organizational Leadership
- Champion the mission, vision, and guiding principles of CEE.
- Provide strategic direction and leadership for Co-operative Education.
- Monitor internal practices to ensure effective operations and external representation of the University.
- Lead the development of new capabilities through the introduction of innovative systems and processes.
- Foster collaborative relationships across CEE, external partners, and the University.
- Identify and implement projects aimed at improving access to co-op, service quality, and stakeholder satisfaction.
- Establish customer service standards and monitor satisfaction levels, taking corrective actions as needed.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited university.
- At least 5 years of experience working with students in an advisory role.
- 3 years of experience promoting student success through engagement and development initiatives in a post-secondary environment is preferred.
- Experience in managing and mentoring student teams.
- Familiarity with research design and methodologies.
- Proven experience with programs supporting underrepresented student populations.
- Strong relationship-building skills and ability to interpret data for process improvement.
- Knowledge of student development theories and engagement practices relevant to Co-operative Education and WIL.
- Commitment to ongoing learning in equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility.
- Proficiency in business analytics and project management.
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to work collaboratively as both a team player and a leader.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Capability to manage stakeholder input and align on key issues.
- Proficient in utilizing data to inform business decisions.
