This role includes providing research assistance to investigators and ensuring adherence to all relevant guidelines, regulations, and policies regarding the use of research, educational, and production animals. The veterinarian actively participates in the development and execution of Animal Use Protocols (AUP).

Nature of Responsibilities:
Reporting to the University Veterinarian, the Veterinary Clinical Specialist collaborates closely with UACC, fellow veterinarians, animal care personnel, and researchers to ensure a cohesive program for veterinary services and support for animal users within the university's animal care and use framework. Responsibilities include delivering clinical care to laboratory animals, overseeing health monitoring, quarantine, importation, and surgical procedures, and ensuring compliance with the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) guidelines and other applicable regulations.

This includes advising on AUP development, contributing to educational and training initiatives, and providing research support. Opportunities for collaborative research are actively encouraged.

The role is set in a dynamic and high-demand environment characterized by continuous change, shifting priorities, and frequent interruptions. The incumbent must effectively manage competing deadlines and multitask. The position requires both teamwork and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision, demonstrating adaptability and flexibility in response to evolving demands while generating and communicating innovative ideas to enhance animal care quality and program services.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with the University Veterinarian and other UACC veterinarians in managing veterinary services and overseeing facilities for all animals utilized in research, education, testing, and production, ensuring optimal veterinary care.
  • Ensures compliance with CCAC guidelines and other relevant regulations, assisting in maintaining uniform policies and procedures across the institution.
  • Works alongside the University Veterinarian to promptly and collaboratively address animal care and use concerns while fostering positive relationships among stakeholders.
  • Acts as Facility Veterinarian for multiple sites, establishing and maintaining a comprehensive clinical program for various species, including sentinel and quarantine protocols, vendor evaluations, animal import/export oversight, and diagnostics. This includes shared emergency on-call duties and occasional non-traditional hours.
  • Conducts animal facility inspections, addressing health and welfare issues, assisting with standard operating procedure development, reviewing veterinary programs, and ensuring proper record-keeping and monitoring. Provides guidance to technical and animal care staff.
  • Assists with AUP development, anesthesia, surgical procedures, post-operative care, and technical support for research and educational activities involving animals; establishes humane intervention points and clinical monitoring practices.
  • Oversees preventive medicine and enrichment initiatives for animals involved in research and education.
  • Collaborates with the UACC Animal User Training Technician to create and deliver training for animal users, students, residents, animal care staff, and technical personnel on humane animal care and use.
  • Supports veterinary student and postdoctoral training in laboratory animal medicine and pathology.
  • Participates as a voting member of the UACC, chairs sub-committees as necessary, and serves as a voting member of the Animal Research Ethics Board.
  • Ensures recovery of costs associated with billable time and resources utilized in support of research projects; identifies cost-saving opportunities and communicates recommendations.
  • Acts as a delegate for the University Veterinarian during their absence.
  • Pursues continuing education to enhance professional development and maintain or achieve American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) Board Certification.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by the University Veterinarian and UACC.

Qualifications

Education:
Candidates must hold a D.V.M. and be eligible for veterinary licensure in Saskatchewan. Experience in laboratory animal medicine is preferred, with additional training in related fields such as microbiology, pathology, and research methodology being advantageous. Board certification or eligibility as a Diplomate of ACLAM is a plus.

Experience:
Applicants should have several years of experience as a clinical veterinarian in animal-based research or private practice. Ideal candidates will have extensive experience as a laboratory animal veterinarian in an academic or research setting, with a diverse range of animal-based research and teaching experience. Clinical and surgical expertise with various species is essential, and familiarity with Animal Biosafety Level 2 and higher is preferred. Knowledge of the academic structure and culture, as well as animal ethics research policies at the University of Saskatchewan, is beneficial.

Skills:
The successful candidate will possess a thorough understanding of the regulations, guidelines, and policies governing the use of animals in research, education, and testing in Canada. They will demonstrate sound judgment, effective interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal. Integrity, professionalism, tact, and diplomacy in interactions with diverse individuals and organizations are crucial. Proficiency in computer applications, including spreadsheets and database software, is required. The candidate must effectively manage time and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment, work well under pressure, and demonstrate the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
