Opportunity Overview:

The Mental Health Adult Inpatient Program at Alberta Health Services is dedicated to providing comprehensive care and treatment for individuals facing severe and persistent mental health challenges. As a Recreation Therapy Specialist, you will report to a Unit Manager and engage in a client-centered therapeutic approach. Your responsibilities will include conducting assessments, offering patient and family support, planning for discharge, facilitating group activities, and providing individualized therapy within an acute psychiatric environment. You will assist clients in identifying and participating in healthy leisure pursuits within the community.

Role Responsibilities:

In your capacity as a Recreation Therapy Specialist, you will collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to deliver holistic services to patients within your designated program or service area. Your practice will be grounded in evidence-based therapeutic recreation principles, ensuring a patient- and family-centered focus in alignment with established policies, procedures, and professional standards. Key responsibilities include:

  • Conducting assessments and managing treatment plans for clients.
  • Providing education and support regarding clients' treatment progress.
  • Offering clinical consultation and support to the healthcare team.
  • Participating in patient rounds, family meetings, and interdisciplinary discussions related to client care.

Essential Qualifications:

A bachelor's degree in Recreation Therapy, Therapeutic Recreation, or Recreation and Leisure Studies is required. Candidates must hold active or eligible registration with the Alberta Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA).

Additional Qualifications:

Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills are essential. Certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BCLS – HLP) is mandatory.

Preferred Experience:

Experience in a rehabilitation setting catering to individuals with serious mental health conditions is preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. A valid Class 4 driver's license is also desirable.
