Overview

The Biology Lab Course Coordinator plays a crucial role in managing the operations of designated undergraduate laboratories within the Biology Department. This position entails the organization and instruction of laboratory-only courses, as well as courses that integrate both lecture and lab components. Responsibilities include developing and authoring laboratory experiments and manuals, crafting assessments, and ensuring that content and resources remain up-to-date. For courses with associated lectures, the Coordinator is tasked with designing experiments that enhance the lecture material.

Key Responsibilities

Management of assigned laboratories, which includes but is not limited to:

  • Independently organizing and conducting laboratory-only courses
  • Independently managing combined lecture and laboratory courses
  • Ensuring laboratory experiments align with the associated course content
  • Creating and updating assignments, laboratory manuals, midterms, and final examinations for assigned laboratory courses
  • Collecting and maintaining laboratory reports, midterms, and exam grades; calculating and submitting final grades to the appropriate office
  • Evaluating assignments, midterms, and exams; calculating and submitting final grades
  • Preparing protocols for laboratory procedures, including individual techniques and manuals
  • Overseeing enrollment in each laboratory/tutorial section, monitoring course limits, and managing course override requests
  • Scheduling laboratory and tutorial sections and resolving scheduling issues in collaboration with the program manager
  • Monitoring laboratory sessions to identify and address potential safety concerns for students and teaching assistants
  • Ordering necessary chemicals for laboratory experiments and arranging for proper waste disposal
  • Coordinating lab setup and teardown with laboratory technicians
  • Purchasing and maintaining laboratory equipment, including addressing minor equipment issues
  • Collaborating with laboratory technicians and teaching assistants to ensure proper storage of equipment and chemicals post-experiment
  • Closing each laboratory section upon completion of the session
  • Being available to address questions from students and teaching assistants
  • Advising and assisting students on an individual basis as needed, including reassigning students who miss laboratory sections
  • Providing initial emotional support to students in distress and referring them for counseling; participating in workshops organized by counseling services for appropriate guidelines
  • Potentially serving on undergraduate committees related to Biology/Science and curriculum development
  • Recommending major equipment purchases and negotiating competitive pricing with vendors
  • Reviewing, updating, and enhancing existing experiments on an annual basis
  • Developing new content annually for laboratory-only courses and specific courses that include laboratory components

Teaching specific courses as assigned by the Associate Chair, Undergraduate:

  • Planning, creating, and delivering specific courses assigned by the Associate Chair, Undergraduate Studies
  • Independently preparing to deliver course content in the classroom or online
  • Organizing and creating assignments, quizzes, midterms, and final exams, including makeup exams for assigned lecture courses
  • Evaluating assignments, midterms, and exams; calculating and submitting final grades

Managing laboratory teaching assistants and other teaching supports (such as co-op students) each term, including but not limited to:

  • Assisting in the recruitment, interviewing, and selection of graduate and undergraduate teaching assistants and co-op students for laboratory placements
  • Meeting regularly with teaching assistants and other support staff to provide direction and clarification regarding laboratory concepts and marking
  • Training, managing, and supervising weekly activities of teaching assistants, including organizing and executing a Teaching Assistant Workshop twice a year
  • Mentoring graduate and undergraduate teaching assistants and other support staff in teaching methodologies
  • Training teaching assistants on safety protocols specific to the laboratories
  • Ensuring teaching assistants and support staff are adequately trained on concepts and fully understand the equipment and procedures to be utilized
  • Designing marking schemes and/or rubrics for teaching assistants
  • Providing individual assistance to undergraduate students as needed, and reassigning students who miss their laboratory sections
  • Coordinating feedback regarding potential issues in laboratories and tutorials
  • Evaluating the performance of teaching assistants and other support staff at the end of each term

Safety Administration

  • Establishing, administering, and enforcing safety standards and regulations, including WHMIS requirements and safety policies, to ensure a secure laboratory environment for students and teaching assistants
  • Updating posted safety procedures, including WHMIS and hazardous waste disposal, within the laboratories
  • Maintaining cleanliness and safety within the laboratory environment
  • Keeping personal certifications current as required by the Safety Office

Qualifications

  • A Master's degree in Biology is required; a PhD is preferred
  • A minimum of two years of teaching experience in a laboratory and/or classroom setting is required, with a broad knowledge of biology
  • A demonstrated understanding of safe chemical handling and emergency procedures in a laboratory environment is essential
  • Ability to demonstrate the proper use of various laboratory equipment commonly used in Biology labs, including but not limited to: microscopes, centrifuges, spectrophotometers, balances, heating/stirring blocks, and pipettors
  • Experience troubleshooting and working with scientific equipment is preferred
  • Familiarity with molecular and microbiology techniques is advantageous
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required
  • Knowledge of modern tools for online teaching is beneficial for the successful execution of this role
  • Strong organizational, technical, analytical, and multitasking skills are essential
