Job Summary

The University of Waterloo seeks a highly qualified and experienced Biology Laboratory Instructor to join our team. As a key member of our academic staff, you will be responsible for delivering high-quality laboratory instruction and educational experiences to our students.

Key Responsibilities
  • Teaching and Instruction
    • Develop and deliver engaging and effective laboratory instruction to undergraduate students
    • Prepare and teach specific courses as assigned by the Associate Chair, Undergraduate Studies
    • Plan, create, and teach specific courses assigned by the Associate Chair, Undergraduate Studies
  • Curriculum Development
    • Develop and update laboratory experiments and manuals
    • Design and develop new content annually for laboratory-only courses and specific courses that include laboratories
  • Student Supervision and Support
    • Supervise and mentor graduate and undergraduate Teaching Assistants and other teaching support staff
    • Provide guidance and support to students on an individual basis, as needed
  • Safety Administration
    • Establish, administer, and enforce safety standards and regulations in the laboratory setting
    • Ensure a safe laboratory environment for students and staff
  • Administrative Responsibilities
    • Oversee enrollment into laboratory/tutorial sections and monitor course limits
    • Sign course override forms and schedule laboratory and tutorial sections
Qualifications
  • MSc in Biology is required, PhD preferred
  • Minimum of two years' teaching experience in a laboratory and/or classroom setting
  • Demonstrated understanding of safe chemical handling and Health and Safety procedures in a laboratory environment
  • Ability to demonstrate the proper use of laboratory equipment
  • Experience with molecular and microbiology techniques
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
