Job Summary

The University of Waterloo is seeking a highly skilled Laboratory Technician to join our team. As a key member of our research and teaching community, you will be responsible for ensuring the smooth execution of laboratory courses for undergraduate students.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement laboratory procedures and protocols for assigned courses, in consultation with instructors and faculty members.
  • Prepare and provide materials, equipment, and supplies for laboratory sessions, including student follow-ups as requested.
  • Perform advanced molecular techniques, such as DNA extraction, quantification, and visualization, for large first-year cell biology courses.
  • Oversee and maintain multi-module instrumentation and computers with sophisticated software, including iWorx stations and spectrophotometers.
  • Clean and maintain laboratory spaces, handling and disposing of hazardous materials according to established protocols.
  • Demonstrate proper and safe operation of equipment, including autoclaves, steamers, centrifuges, and microscopes.
  • Assist instructors and faculty members in developing new experiments for teaching and research purposes.
  • Troubleshoot and update existing experiments to improve pedagogy, in consultation with instructors and faculty members.
  • Recommend changes and revisions to student lab manuals and lab procedures.
  • Create and maintain technician course notes and communicate with faculty and instructors.
  • Service teaching equipment and maintain records.
  • Support Teaching Assistants during lab sessions, troubleshooting technical issues and explaining experiment principles.

Administrative Duties

  • Source and order laboratory and preparation room maintenance supplies.
  • Train and supervise undergraduate co-op students.
  • Provide recommendations and costing to Associate Chair for equipment to improve pedagogy, in consultation with instructors and faculty members.
  • Establish and maintain liaison with sales representatives for technical and price updates.
  • Prepare and maintain chemical inventory in accordance with University and legislative requirements.

Safety Responsibilities

  • Maintain personal certifications as required by the Safety Office.
  • Update posted safety procedures, including WHMIS and hazardous waste disposal.
  • Maintain equipment certifications and associated records.
  • Prepare and maintain current Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Maintain first aid kits and safety inspection reports.

Other Responsibilities

  • Serve as a technical resource person for faculty, research associates, and students in developing research projects.
  • Fulfill teaching assistant duties as needed.
  • Support other areas of department operations, as assigned by the Chair, Associate Chair, or Administrative Officer.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Biology with significant experience required; Master of Science preferred.
  • Two years' experience required, with broad knowledge of human physiology, animal physiology, and cell biology.
  • Advanced knowledge of molecular techniques.
  • Prior experience as a Teaching Assistant is an asset.
  • Experience troubleshooting and working with scientific equipment is an asset.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment is essential.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills required.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite.
