The Microbiology Laboratory Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting the operations of the Microbiology Preparation Rooms within the Biology Department. This position is essential for the smooth functioning of undergraduate microbiology courses and involves collaboration with both academic and technical staff. This is a full-time role during the academic term.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safeguards the lab environment by decontaminating and sterilizing waste and materials.
  • Prepares and organizes laboratory glassware for microbiology educational sessions.
  • Ensures teaching laboratories are fully stocked and ready prior to each class.
  • Maintains an orderly system for glassware storage.
  • Distributes lab coats to students enrolled in undergraduate courses.
  • Assists in the thorough cleanup of labs at the end of the academic term.
  • Prepares necessary materials and cultures for student use in microbiology courses.
  • Monitors and ensures the safe operation of laboratory equipment.
  • Manages inventory levels and places orders for laboratory supplies as needed.
  • Provides support to Department Technicians with various operational tasks.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or College Diploma in Biology or a related field.
  • A minimum of two years of relevant experience in a laboratory setting.
  • Previous experience as a Teaching Assistant is preferred.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Excellent communication skills are essential.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications is required.
