Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Vancouver Airport Authority Full time

At Vancouver Airport Authority, we are committed to fostering a sustainable and resilient future, aiming for net-zero emissions by 2030. Our mission is to serve our community while supporting the economy. The Climate and Environment department is tasked with implementing YVR's Environmental Management plan, which includes initiatives to reduce carbon emissions, enhance waste diversion, conserve water, and protect the local ecosystem. Additionally, we manage YVR's Noise Management Plan, ensuring a balance between safe, convenient travel and a pleasant urban environment.

Position Overview

The Lead Archaeologist for Environmental Stewardship is a crucial position within YVR, encompassing a range of responsibilities. This expert role is responsible for developing and executing the airport's archaeological initiatives, conducting assessments, and providing specialized guidance in cultural resource management to support development activities at Vancouver International Airport.

The role entails overseeing all archaeological evaluations and field operations, including excavations and other ground-disturbing activities. Acting as a liaison with various stakeholder groups, particularly local Indigenous communities, this position fosters communication and collaboration to ensure the sustainable development of the airport while safeguarding its cultural heritage and minimizing environmental impacts.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Offering expert advice and direction in archaeological resource management for all development activities on Sea Island.
  • Conducting audits, including field inspections, assessments of sites, and excavations, particularly at project initiation or in response to unexpected findings.
  • Preparing and assisting in the completion of cultural resource survey reports, data management, impact assessments, and permitting for assigned projects, while coordinating archaeological initiatives to ensure compliance with regulations and effective resource management, including scheduling, staff allocation, technical approach development, and subcontractor involvement.
  • Developing and implementing YVR's Archaeological Program, establishing clear objectives and timelines.
  • Representing the Airport Authority at public meetings, information sessions, and conferences, while consulting with industry stakeholders, tenants, government entities, and other departments on environmental and archaeological initiatives.
  • Supervising 1-2 staff or students assisting with program support, along with several professional consultants under direct program oversight.

Key Qualifications Include:

  • A University Degree in Archaeology or Anthropology with a focus on archaeology, along with registration or eligibility for registration as a Professional Archaeologist.
  • A minimum of 8-10 years of relevant experience in archaeological and environmental resource management, preferably related to infrastructure, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, including at least 2 years in project or operations management.
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating with local Indigenous groups, including Urban Indigenous communities and the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations.
  • Familiarity with provincial regulatory bodies, municipal staff, and various government levels, along with a thorough understanding of relevant legislation, including the Heritage Conservation Act, ensuring compliance in all archaeological activities.
  • A valid BC driver's license is required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, coupled with effective conflict resolution, mediation, and negotiation abilities.

This position is open to both Vancouver Airport Authority employees and external applicants. Previous job performance will be considered for all internal candidates.

Salary Range: $97,599 to $127,555 per annum, based on a 37.5-hour work week, tailored to reflect individual experience, qualifications, and internal equity.

At YVR, your employment experience extends beyond salary. We prioritize your personal and professional growth, well-being, and a vibrant work culture, offering generous vacation days, comprehensive health benefits, retirement savings matching, wellness programs, community engagement opportunities, and continuous learning initiatives.

Please note that availability may vary based on employment type and is subject to eligibility requirements and potential changes by YVR.
