Position Overview

The Senior Underwriting Analyst plays a pivotal role in evaluating, processing, and authorizing residential mortgage applications. This position supports advanced approval inquiries from intermediate underwriters, manages requests from supervisors, and participates in escalation procedures. The role requires a deep understanding of residential mortgage underwriting to serve as a consultant for branches, mortgage advisors, and brokers who are appealing credit decisions, negotiating satisfactory resolutions within the organization's business and credit risk frameworks.

This position operates with a degree of autonomy, guiding junior underwriters and taking on a leadership role in coaching, training, and ensuring quality standards. Additionally, the Senior Underwriting Analyst prepares and submits recommendations to management for residential mortgage applications that exceed the authorized limit.

Key Responsibilities

  • Decision Making: Assess, approve, or decline applications within established organizational guidelines, with an authorized lending limit of up to $3,000,000, covering residential mortgages and secured/unsecured applications.
  • Risk Evaluation: Analyze and prepare recommendations for applications that exceed authority limits, presenting them to the manager or senior underwriter.
  • Analytical Skills: Collect, review, and evaluate information to complete documentation supporting each credit application in line with risk parameters and insurer guidelines.
  • Relationship Management: Manage correspondence and inquiries from both internal and external partners, including insurers, appraisers, and legal representatives.
  • Agility: Handle high volumes of work efficiently, meeting tight deadlines while maintaining a high standard of quality and diligence. Review various lending products on a daily basis.
  • Leadership: Mentor junior underwriters, providing guidance and support in coaching, training, and quality assurance. Prepare and present recommendations for applications exceeding authority limits.
