Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Optical System Designer to join our team. As an Optical System Designer, you will be responsible for performing end-to-end optical system testing of new software and hardware features, raising tickets for issues found, and working with relevant teams to fix them.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform end-to-end optical system testing of new software and hardware features
  • Raise tickets for issues found and work with relevant teams to fix them
  • Generate and execute test plans, and report on progress
  • Participate in group design meetings
  • Present work and results to internal and external teams for review and discussion
  • End-user support and troubleshooting as required
  • Explaining how the product or specific features work to other internal groups or answering customer questions

Collaboration with Stakeholders

  • Internal brainstorming discussions within our team to discuss solutions to problems or ideas for new features
  • Discussing fixes/changes/improvements with the hardware and software teams
  • Discussions and reviews with Product Line Management
  • Helping out the Product Verification teams
  • Help to set up demonstrations of new features on our system to be shown to customers

Areas of Impact

  • We have a huge role in determining how to 'shape' the product and making sure all the relevant teams are in the loop.

Requirements

  • Masters degree in an electrical engineering or physics discipline with a specific interest in optics, photonics, and telecommunications
  • Familiar with the principles of fiber optic communication systems and optical components
  • Understanding of optical propagation and impairments
  • Knowledge of the principles of control loops is an asset
  • Experience with optical lab test equipment and measurement techniques
  • Experience with modeling tools, e.g., Matlab, would be an asset
  • Proven communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills are essential

Compensation and Benefits

The annual salary range for this position is $57,100 to $90,100 CAD. Ciena offers a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision plans, participation in 401(K) (USA) & DCPP (Canada) with company matching, Employee Stock Purchase Program (ESPP), Employee Assistance Program (EAP), company-paid holidays, paid sick leave, and vacation time.
