Position Overview:

Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer, the ideal candidate will possess strong interpersonal skills and sound judgment, with the capability to identify and resolve issues while ensuring compliance with all financial processes, procedures, and reporting obligations of the organization.

Key Responsibilities:

A. Direct Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the preparation of monthly financial statements and related reports.
  • Coordinate year-end working papers for audits, including joint ventures.
  • Assist in compiling materials for quarterly Board Meetings.
  • Ensure accurate reporting of daily and monthly cash balances across the group of companies.
  • Prepare statements of adjustments and manage the receipt of closing proceeds for land and bulk acquisitions.
  • Provide accurate projections for closing proceeds.
  • Act as the cashier for the corporation, managing cash calls and ensuring proper funding of all accounts.
  • Serve as the liaison with legal offices regarding trust items, new projects, and acquisitions.
  • Coordinate with CRA and third-party auditors as necessary.
  • Offer ongoing financial support to the management team, including funding draws.
  • Collaborate with the IT Department on ERP upgrades.
  • Supervise finance staff.

B. Indirect Responsibilities: The following tasks are performed by subordinate staff, but the Controller must be knowledgeable about these duties to ensure timely and accurate execution:

  • Prepare statements of adjustments and manage the receipt of proceeds for property purchases.
  • Ensure vendor compliance with insurance and WSIB coverage.
  • Approve invoice coding and ledger entries in accordance with corporate standards.
  • Monitor gross margin reporting on sales.
  • Oversee job costing, budgeting, and commitment controls.
  • Calculate and post costs associated with housing sales.
  • Manage condo fee payments and reconciliations as required.
  • Conduct bank reconciliations and HST remittance for multiple companies.
  • Process invoices and payments efficiently.
  • Handle property taxes for residential, commercial properties, and land recoveries.
  • Manage the City of Ottawa permits process.
  • Oversee T5's, T5018's, and corporate tax payments as necessary.

Qualifications:

  • CPA – CA, CMA, or CGA designation.
  • 5-7 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in real estate within home building, commercial, or residential rental sectors.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Outlook, and Word.
  • Strong background in utilizing ERP and other financial software systems.
  • Familiarity with ECI-Mark's Systems or Yardi software is advantageous.
  • Previous supervisory experience is essential.
  • Detail-oriented with a track record of producing accurate, high-quality work.
  • Able to manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Encourage and mentor staff to achieve their best potential.
  • Self-motivated with a proactive approach to tasks.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and French is a plus.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
