Instrumentation and Control Engineer

We are seeking an Instrumentation and Control Engineer to join our team. The Fuel Handling and Engineered Solutions group at BWXT NEC is engaged in the design, manufacturing, development, testing, and servicing of tools for on-power refueling, reactor maintenance, and medical isotope delivery utilized globally. We are pioneers in creating automated systems that facilitate continuous on-power refueling of CANDU reactors, addressing some of the most pressing challenges in the nuclear industry. POSITION OVERVIEW:

Reporting to the Instrumentation & Controls Engineering Manager, this role involves providing technical guidance for projects and facilitating technical interactions with both internal and external stakeholders. The Instrumentation & Controls Engineering department specializes in the control systems and instrumentation related to Fuel Handling Systems and other plant components, as well as medical isotope systems and remote delivery machines. These systems are intricate and often located in specialized environments. Our department possesses the expertise and historical knowledge necessary to assist clients with engineering design, troubleshooting, maintenance, and support tasks. We utilize tools such as AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, and IntEC to produce concept drawings, detailed designs, and wiring diagrams, and we can also devise replacement solutions for outdated components.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Create elementary drawings, electrical assembly drawings, and technical documents in accordance with relevant codes and standards.
  • Collaborate with various customer groups to gather site-specific design information.
  • Conduct walk-downs of equipment within the facility.
  • Prepare and present technical information to stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance of designs with applicable company and regulatory standards.
  • Participate in design reviews and provide input during customer meetings.
  • Oversee testing and commissioning of complex systems.
  • Review component selection for equipment.
  • Adhere to project timelines and budgetary constraints.
  • Support the development and estimation of engineering proposals.
  • Ensure designs are manufacturable and meet requirements.
  • Lead by example to ensure adherence to processes and quality standards.
  • Facilitate process improvements and technology integration for superior product development.
  • Maintain customer relationships and ensure alignment with market needs.
  • Assist in proposal development and technical presentations.
  • Identify project risks and propose solutions.
  • Ensure health and safety compliance in all project activities.
  • Occasional travel may be required for client meetings.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • B.A.Sc. in Electrical, Instrumentation & Control, Automation, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Possession or pursuit of a current PEO license.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in design engineering within regulated industries.
  • Familiarity with industrial automation technologies, low voltage power distribution, and control circuits.
  • Proven ability to lead engineering projects through their complete lifecycle.
  • Experience in writing design documentation and collaborating across interdisciplinary teams.
  • Strong communication skills, capable of conveying complex information clearly.
  • Creative problem-solving abilities and a collaborative mindset.
  • Willingness to work remotely as needed.

DESIRED ATTRIBUTES:

  • Experience with IBM DOORS and knowledge of CSA Nuclear Codes.
  • Strong technical writing and presentation skills.
  • Understanding of Engineering Change Control concepts.
  • Ability to work independently while coordinating with diverse team members.
  • Familiarity with the Canadian Electrical Code.
  • Project management training or experience.
