About the Opportunity

The Government of Nova Scotia is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Court Officer (Judicial Support) to join our team in Halifax. As a key member of our Court Services Division, you will play a critical role in ensuring the smooth operation of our courts and providing exceptional support to our judges and staff.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate and manage court hearings in all levels of court, ensuring timely and efficient proceedings.
  • Provide confidential administrative and organizational support to the judiciary, including drafting and preparing complex orders and court documentation.
  • Act as the clerk of the court in all courts, including jury sittings, and perform quasi-judicial duties as a Justice of the Peace.
  • Train and mentor new staff in day-to-day operational activities and provide guidance on court procedures and legal terminology.
  • Utilize technology to facilitate virtual or remote court hearings and maintain detailed knowledge of administrative policies set by the court and court administration.
  • Provide professional administrative assistance to judges, including coordinating schedules, liaising with court officials and counsel, and responding to queries.
Requirements
  • Two years of post-secondary education in a related discipline, plus five years of related experience in a legal environment.
  • Excellent keyboarding, data entry, and transcribing skills, as well as proficiency in MS Office products and virtual platforms such as MS Teams and video conferencing.
  • Superior organizational abilities, strong prioritization skills, and attention to detail, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including listening skills, with the ability to handle difficult individuals in complex and sensitive situations.
  • Knowledge of the Rules and Statutes that govern the courts, as well as a sound working knowledge of legal documents, forms, and court procedures.
