POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Curator of North American Archaeology will adopt a collaborative approach to managing ROM's North American archaeology collection, particularly focusing on Ontario. This includes creating exhibitions and educational programs in partnership with Indigenous communities, while also conducting research that aligns with the museum's strategic objectives. The position will play a pivotal role in the repatriation of Indigenous ancestral artifacts, working closely with the Hatch Curator of Indigenous Art and Culture, the Indigenous Interpretive Planner, and the Indigenous Museum Educator. Reporting to the Co-Chief Curator of Art and Culture, the Curator will be instrumental in re-evaluating colonial practices and emphasizing Indigenous viewpoints. An accomplished researcher, the Curator will develop innovative exhibitions and interpret the North American archaeology collection through inclusive and interdisciplinary methodologies, leveraging digital practices and creative solutions.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Collections Management, Research, and Exhibitions
  • Lead the repatriation efforts of Indigenous ancestral artifacts, including human remains, through meaningful engagement with relevant communities, while establishing strategic priorities for repatriation.
  • Develop a comprehensive vision for the North American archaeology collection, including a long-term collection development strategy that aligns with ROM's mission and values.
  • Oversee the stewardship of the North American archaeology collection through field research, care, documentation, and publication.
  • Expand ROM's North American archaeology collection through active fieldwork and scholarly research.
  • Produce original research and publications related to ROM's collections and exhibitions.
  • Facilitate research initiatives involving visiting scholars focused on the North American archaeology collection.
Exhibition and Gallery Development
  • Collaborate with community partners and curatorial colleagues to create innovative, visitor-focused gallery and exhibition projects.
  • Engage in interpretative planning for gallery spaces, contributing to the redevelopment of exhibitions dedicated to First Peoples Art and Culture.
  • Oversee the content development for gallery displays, rotations, and special exhibitions related to North American archaeology.
Public Engagement and Community Programs
  • Initiate both onsite and virtual educational programs related to North American archaeology in collaboration with Indigenous Museum Educators.
  • Build and nurture relationships with Indigenous communities to foster dialogue and interpretation of their ancestral artifacts.
  • Deliver lectures, tours, and workshops for diverse audiences, including volunteers and museum supporters.
  • Seek financial and other support for exhibitions and programs through partnerships with professional organizations and donors.
  • Engage in additional responsibilities related to collections, research, exhibitions, and community outreach as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Advanced degree in archaeology, social-cultural anthropology, or a related field, or equivalent experience in curation and research focused on North America.
  • Professional experience in a museum or cultural institution is advantageous.
  • Proven experience in archaeological fieldwork and collaboration with local communities.
  • Strong understanding of the complexities surrounding collections and exhibitions.
  • Excellent proficiency in both spoken and written English.
  • Knowledge of an Indigenous language is a plus.
  • Experience managing projects funded by government grants is beneficial.
  • Personal experience with Indigenous cultures may be considered.
  • This position is part of an initiative to enhance Indigenous representation within the organization.

COMPENSATION & EMPLOYMENT TERMS
STATUS: Full-time Permanent
SALARY: Competitive salary range
SCHEDULE: 35 hours per week
PROBATIONARY PERIOD: Six months
LOCATION: Hybrid work arrangement
