Key Responsibilities:

  • Advocate for the mission, objectives, and policies of the Association while being aware of its strengths and challenges.
  • Propose potential nominees for the Board who possess significant achievements and can contribute meaningfully to the Board's efforts and the Association's advancement.
  • Actively participate in task forces and/or committees as requested by the Chair.
  • Attend events and activities organized by the Association whenever feasible.
  • Oversee the strategic direction and mission of the TRHA through regular evaluations of the strategic plan and Board policies, alongside quarterly financial reviews.

Governance Duties:

  • Ensure the integrity and effectiveness of Board meetings, adhering to established rules of order to foster inclusive discussions and timely decision-making.
  • Fulfill governance obligations, comply with relevant laws and the Association's by-laws, and maintain accountability for performance.
  • Ensure that Board decisions align with TRHA's vision, mission, and values.
  • Monitor financial planning and reporting.
  • Address conflict of interest issues in accordance with the by-laws.
  • Establish procedures for fundraising and resource acquisition necessary for TRHA's operations.
  • Maintain positive relationships with donors and partner organizations.
  • Foster effective communication and collaboration with fellow Board members, officers, and museum management.
  • Provide guidance and support to museum management and the volunteer committee as agreed upon by the Board.

Meeting Expectations:

  • Participate in monthly meetings, with a mix of in-person and virtual attendance, and review agendas in advance.
  • Engage in meaningful discussions during Board and committee meetings, while respecting the collective decisions made by the Board.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding Board discussions and decisions, representing the Board or Association only when authorized.
  • Propose agenda items for meetings to ensure that critical policy matters are addressed.

We are committed to diversity and welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds, including those who identify as Indigenous, Black, persons of color, persons with disabilities, and individuals of any sexual orientation or gender identity.

About the Museum:

The Toronto Railway Museum, established in 2010, is dedicated to celebrating the rich railway history of Toronto, which dates back to 1853. The museum aims to educate the public on how this heritage has shaped the city into a significant economic center.

As the museum continues to grow, we are looking for Board members who are passionate about supporting a self-sustaining museum in downtown Toronto. We value innovative thinkers who can contribute to creative solutions and believe in the importance of diverse representation within our organization.

The museum operates under the governance of the Toronto Railway Historical Association, which is overseen by a ten-member Board of Directors. Our Board comprises individuals with varied expertise, including history, finance, marketing, governance, education, communications, law, and consulting. This is an exciting time to become involved as our Board Marketing Committee leads a rebranding initiative for the museum.
