Nominations are welcomed at any time. The Board is composed of up to 21 directors, including two representatives from the City of Toronto.
Members of the Board serve voluntarily and do not receive compensation for their contributions. The Toronto Arts Council is distinctive among funding organizations as it maintains a majority of artist members. These artist members represent a diverse array of artistic disciplines, including community arts, dance, music, theatre, literature, and visual and media arts. Additionally, individuals in leadership roles from various sectors such as media, law, finance, and communications also contribute to the Board.
The Board aims to achieve a balanced representation of different artistic disciplines and practices, reflecting the cultural, ethnic, and racial diversity of Toronto.
The Board of Directors is elected annually by the members of the Toronto Cultural Advisory Corporation. Each member can serve a maximum of six consecutive one-year terms.
The Board serves as the ultimate decision-making authority for the Toronto Arts Council, establishing policies and priorities in consultation with its artistic committees. Recommendations from these committees are presented to the Board through their respective chairs, who are also Board members.
Responsibilities of Board Members
Board members act as representatives for the Toronto Arts Council, engaging with the community to foster interest and partnerships, and advocating for public investment in the arts.
Members are expected to be passionate supporters of the arts community, understanding the mission, values, and key activities of the organization, and promoting its cause to the broader public.
The Board is responsible for the overall strategic direction of the Toronto Arts Council, which includes:
- Developing general and long-term policies
- Setting funding priorities
- Determining annual budget requests for grants and operations
- Working towards achieving the approved budget
- Approving operational and grants budget allocations
- Overseeing financial matters, including quarterly financial reviews and audits
- Approving committee and jury grant recommendations
Collectively and individually, Directors must represent the Toronto Arts Council within the community and consistently promote its interests in a professional manner.
Directors should possess knowledge and experience in the arts, whether through professional or volunteer roles, and demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the Toronto arts landscape.
Directors are expected to remain unbiased towards any specific interest group, prioritizing the overall welfare of the arts community.
Active engagement in the affairs of the Toronto Arts Council is essential, along with familiarity with its programs, resources, clients, and staff. Directors should commit significant time to their responsibilities.
Attendance at Board meetings and committee meetings is expected, along with an understanding of community interests related to the Council's mandate.
