Position Overview:

As an integral part of a dynamic Recreation team, you will offer recreational guidance and support to participants in Norfolk County's diverse recreation initiatives catering to all age groups, including day camps and special events. Your responsibilities will encompass program design, execution, participant safety, and administrative tasks, while overseeing groups of 1 to 10 individuals.

This role fosters an environment where children, youth, adults, and families can enhance their skills, forge friendships, engage socially, and boost their self-esteem. You will be accountable for the safety and well-being of participants under the direction of the Recreation Coordinators, ensuring that activities are secure, inclusive, and of high quality, adhering to the High Five principles.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain attendance records by promptly notifying the appropriate Recreation Coordinator or Supervisor of any absences.
  • Engage in the delivery of a variety of recreation and active living program activities provided by Norfolk County Recreation, such as after-school programs, sports, arts and crafts, skill development sessions, holiday camps, and special events. Adapt programming to meet the needs of participants.
  • Monitor participant behavior closely and enforce relevant policies.
  • Implement lesson plans provided by Recreation Coordinators or Supervisors.
  • Assist with snack service and cleanup when necessary. Prepare and organize program materials and equipment, reporting any damages or shortages.
  • Exhibit the confidence and capability to make independent decisions that prioritize the best interests of participants. Effectively resolve conflicts and challenges as they arise.
  • Prioritize the safety and well-being of participants throughout all programs and events, assessing potential risks and proactively implementing measures to mitigate them.
  • Act as a liaison with participants' parents (when applicable), reinforcing Norfolk County's commitment to customer service, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Adhere to Norfolk County policies and procedures during program activities.
  • Foster positive and constructive relationships with colleagues and the public.
  • Participate in orientation and training sessions.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications:

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Minimum age of 15 years and currently enrolled in a secondary education institution or higher learning.
  • Standard First Aid with CPR Level C certification (must be obtained by start date if hired).
  • Completion of HIGH FIVE – Principles of Healthy Child Development; Principles in Action; Healthy Mind, Healthy Child (must be obtained within 2 months of start date if hired).
  • Experience working with children and knowledge of child development, crafts, sports, music, and games; experience with adults and seniors is a plus.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience (e.g., student council member, youth council leadership role).

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to design, facilitate, and adapt program plans and activities daily.
  • Strong customer service and time management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Familiarity with the recreation programs offered by Norfolk County.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team setting, follow instructions, and complete tasks to a high standard with minimal supervision, adhering to all health and safety policies.
  • Ability to interact courteously and effectively with the public.
  • Motivated and hardworking, capable of working outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Understanding of safe work practices related to job responsibilities and the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Compensation:

Salary: $17.38 per hour

Employment Type:

Temporary Part-Time (up to 15 hours per week, with increased hours during holiday camps)
