Barrie, Ontario, Canada Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre Full time

We are currently seeking a Regular Full-time or Regular Part-time Podiatrist to enhance our healthcare services.

The Podiatrist will be responsible for managing diabetic foot ulcers, which encompasses diabetic foot wound care, prevention strategies, education, screening, inpatient foot care, wound management, and orthotic manufacturing and dispensing.

Required Qualifications:

  • Registered in good standing with the College of Chiropodists of Ontario
  • Three-Year Diploma in Chiropody (DCh)
  • Undergraduate Degree in a related field
  • Membership with the College of Chiropodists of Ontario (mandatory)
  • Valid CPR Certification (an asset)
  • At least 50 hours of continuing education over the last two years
  • Post-Graduate courses, including Local Anesthesia and soft tissue surgery (an asset)

Professional Experience:

  • Minimum of two years of practical experience in soft-tissue surgery, wound care, foot biomechanics, ulcer debridement, offloading techniques, and orthotic and footwear fittings
  • Relevant experience as a diabetes educator
  • A solid healthcare knowledge base developed through prior experience

Core Responsibilities:

Diabetes Foot Wound Management:
- Conduct assessments and treatments for diabetic foot wounds, including debridement, dressing recommendations, antibiotic prescriptions, and pressure offloading.

Diabetes Wound Prevention:
- Ongoing monitoring and care, which may involve callus reduction, nail care or removal, footwear fitting and adjustments, and annual assessments to evaluate foot pathology risk.

Diabetes Foot Health Education:
- Provide education for patients, staff, and the community.
- During initial assessments, offer new patients information on diabetes foot health and prevention of complications.
- Educate staff through participation in wound care teams and in-services.
- Share information with the community through lectures and wound education events.

In-Patient Foot Health:
- Deliver wound management and general care for patients with compromised diabetes.

Orthotic Manufacturing and Dispensing:
- Conduct biomechanical assessments followed by foot casting.
- Responsible for orthotic fittings, adjustments, and manufacturing, as well as footwear fittings.
- Off-loading pressure is crucial for healing pressure sores.

Administrative Responsibilities:
- May include compiling monthly statistics, attending professional practice meetings, and participating in wound care team meetings.
