Position Overview: We are thrilled to announce an opening for a new Artistic Director at Propeller Dance, a distinguished Canadian dance organization dedicated to the integration of disability and dance since 2007.

About Propeller Dance: As a trailblazer in inclusive dance and inter-arts performances, we believe that dance is a universal expression that should be accessible to all. Our organization has evolved into a mid-sized arts institution recognized nationally and internationally for its groundbreaking contributions to the field.

Role Responsibilities:

  1. Artistic Vision: Shape and communicate the artistic direction and objectives of the organization, building upon the goals outlined in the strategic plan. This includes defining thematic concepts, performance styles, and long-term artistic ambitions.
  2. Repertoire Management: Curate the company's repertoire by selecting choreographers and dance pieces that align with our mission and resonate with our audience.
  3. Leadership in Rehearsals: Oversee casting decisions and lead rehearsals, ensuring dancers grasp and perform choreography with clarity and creativity.
  4. Collaborative Engagement: Work alongside composers, designers, and other artists to realize productions. Foster partnerships for touring and educational initiatives, particularly with IBPOC collaborators.
  5. Mentorship: Guide and support dancers in their artistic and professional development, fostering an inclusive and nurturing environment.
  6. Community Outreach: Connect with audiences through educational programs, pre-performance discussions, and collaborations with local organizations to broaden appreciation for dance.
  7. Advocacy: Champion accessibility and representation within the disability dance community, ensuring our work reflects diverse experiences.
  8. Board Relations: Serve as the primary liaison between the Board and the organization, facilitating communication and translating directives into actionable plans.

Administrative Duties:

  • Supervise key staff members and collaborate closely with the General Manager.
  • Attend and contribute to Board meetings, providing updates and insights.
  • Support fundraising efforts and identify new funding opportunities.
  • Act as a spokesperson for the organization at public events.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years in an artistic leadership role within a cultural or performing arts organization.
  • Strong foundation in contemporary dance with a commitment to inclusive practices.
  • Proven leadership abilities and a vision for guiding artistic development.
  • Excellent organizational skills and a participatory approach to management.
  • Experience working with diverse communities and individuals with varying abilities.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
