Position Overview: We are thrilled to announce an opening for the role of Artistic Director at Propeller Dance, a leading Canadian dance organization dedicated to inclusive practices in the arts.

About Propeller Dance: Established in 2007, Propeller Dance has set the standard for integrating disability and dance, creating a vibrant community that celebrates diverse artistic expressions. As a recognized mid-sized arts institution, we are committed to fostering an environment where dance is accessible to all.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Artistic Direction: Shape and communicate the artistic vision and objectives of the organization, aligning with the strategic plan. This includes overseeing thematic development, performance styles, and long-term artistic goals.
  • Curatorial Duties: Select and curate the repertoire for the company, ensuring alignment with our mission and audience engagement. Plan for the rotation and revival of existing works.
  • Leadership in Rehearsals: Direct casting and lead rehearsals, fostering artistic expression and ensuring effective choreography execution.
  • Collaborative Engagement: Work alongside composers, designers, and other artists to bring productions to fruition. Engage with partners in educational and touring projects, promoting inclusivity.
  • Mentorship: Guide and support dancers in their artistic and professional development, fostering an inclusive and supportive environment.
  • Community Outreach: Enhance audience engagement through educational initiatives, outreach programs, and partnerships with local organizations.
  • Advocacy: Represent the organization in the disability dance community, advocating for accessibility and inclusion in all aspects of our work.
  • Board Relations: Serve as the primary liaison between the Board and the organization, ensuring effective communication and collaboration.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years in an artistic leadership role within a cultural or performing arts organization.
  • Proven experience in contemporary dance and inclusive design.
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills, with a commitment to inclusivity.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
