Position Overview

The Government of Saskatchewan is seeking a dedicated professional to oversee forest operations and ensure compliance with regulations on Crown Forest lands. This role involves leading a team responsible for managing forest industry activities and facilitating sustainable practices.

Key Responsibilities
  • Direct a team of operational staff to monitor and regulate forest industry practices.
  • Review and authorize forest industry operational plans for the sustainable harvest of forest resources.
  • Ensure compliance within the designated area through field investigations and responsive actions.
  • Conduct public consultations regarding forest management with various stakeholders, including First Nations and Métis communities.
  • Provide expert guidance on forest policy and management to other government branches and support senior staff on related issues.
  • Collaborate with resource management specialists to develop solutions that align with ecosystem management principles.
Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Proven ability to lead, mentor, and develop a diverse team, fostering a productive and respectful work environment.
  • Strong knowledge of ecosystem-based forest management principles and relevant legislation.
  • Experience in harvesting, road construction, water crossing installation, and boreal forest silviculture.
  • Understanding of policy development and strategic planning processes.
  • Familiarity with compliance and enforcement theories related to natural resource law.
  • Ability to facilitate public consultations with various stakeholders to create and implement sustainable forest management strategies.
Work Environment

The successful candidate must demonstrate a commitment to workplace health and safety and be prepared for:

  • Fieldwork throughout the year, including travel to remote locations and overnight stays.
  • Operation of a 4-wheel drive vehicle and all-terrain vehicles in off-road conditions.
Educational Background

Typically, the competencies required for this position would be acquired through a degree in forestry, along with substantial experience in forest operations, including planning, harvesting, and silviculture.

Applicants must hold a valid driver's license and be eligible for registration as a Registered Professional Forester (RPF) within three years of employment.

This position will remain open until filled.
