Position Overview:

Rakuten Kobo is in search of a Creative Director to enhance the creative vision across various initiatives and collaborate with an internal team to fulfill Kobo's brand promise in impactful ways for all customers, across diverse touchpoints and regions.

This position will play a vital role in guiding and supporting marketing and creative projects, from the development of creative briefs to the final execution of creative assets. The Creative Director will closely partner with the Director of Creative Operations and the Vice President of Brand to lead and manage the implementation of a global initiative that will influence all owned touchpoints: establishing a robust visual and written language along with a design framework that elevates the brand.

The ideal candidate should possess a fervor for innovative concepts while ensuring alignment with business goals. Strong interpersonal, persuasive, and presentation skills are essential. A solid background in retail, digital, social media, email, print, and the creative development process is crucial. The candidate must exhibit exceptional communication, relationship-building, influencing, and analytical skills, acting as a brand champion throughout the organization.

This role requires collaboration with a team of in-house graphic designers, copywriters, and external agencies as needed, with a focus on enhancing efficiency and quality. The Creative Director will also be expected to produce designs and assets personally, including but not limited to: proof of concepts with asset mock-ups, a brand guideline manual, campaign playbooks, and other high-visibility materials across all channels. A strong design background is necessary, along with the enthusiasm to engage in the creative process to produce inspirational and brand-focused work. This individual will proactively collaborate with various stakeholders to bring the brand to life through compelling copy and stunning design across multiple channels and markets, ensuring a consistent voice that resonates locally.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and execute design projects from inception to completion.
  • Develop and present creative concepts, delivering comprehensive toolkits, advertising materials, video assets, and more to support initiatives.
  • Collaborate closely with Creative Operations, Brand Marketing, and Brand Strategy to ensure alignment of concepts and vision with goals and operational requirements.
  • Generate innovative ideas to effectively communicate concepts and promote our products/services.
  • Ensure designs are accessible, user-friendly, and optimized for various devices.
  • Provide art direction during photography and video shoots.
  • Maintain brand consistency throughout all creative endeavors.
  • Engage with various stakeholders to meet expectations.
  • Stay informed about industry trends and tools.

Design Leadership:

  • Facilitate reviews with stakeholders and peers to foster creative trust and understanding.
  • Encourage the team to advance their ideas and advocate for innovation.
  • Create an environment of inspiration, trust, and creativity.
  • Lead creative brainstorming sessions.

Collaboration:

  • Work alongside various stakeholders and partners to ensure creative outputs align with business strategies and objectives.
  • Establish a culture of respect and transparency.
  • Collaborate closely with Design, Copy, and Production Leads to ensure concepts and brand development are consistent with operational design and copy requirements.

Design Strategy:

  • Incorporate performance and user testing data into design decisions.
  • Ensure creative concepts and brand standards align with business objectives and operational needs.

Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in a senior creative leadership position.
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills with the ability to identify core issues and provide insightful creative solutions.
  • Detail-oriented, highly motivated, and results-driven.
  • A portfolio showcasing completed design projects.
  • Expert proficiency in design software, including Figma and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Extensive experience in design, particularly in digital formats.
  • Proven track record of delivering exceptional results with a focus on flawless creative output and innovative, strategic approaches that enhance brand loyalty and customer engagement.
  • Strong aesthetic sensibility with a refined understanding of colors, fonts, layouts, and compositions.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work collaboratively within a team.
  • Capability to articulate and justify design concepts and processes.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in motion design.
  • Previous work in eReading, eCommerce, retail, entertainment, or software sectors.
