Rakuten Kobo is seeking a Creative Director to enhance creative direction across various initiatives and collaborate with an internal team to fulfill Kobo's brand promise in impactful ways for all customers, across diverse touchpoints and regions.
This role is pivotal in guiding and supporting marketing and creative projects, from the inception of creative briefs to the final execution of creative assets. The Creative Director will closely partner with the Director of Creative Operations and the Vice President of Brand to oversee the implementation of a global initiative that impacts all owned touchpoints, aiming to establish a robust visual and written language along with a comprehensive design system that elevates the brand.
The ideal candidate will possess a fervor for innovative thinking while ensuring alignment with business objectives. Strong interpersonal, persuasive, and presentation skills are essential. A solid background in retail, digital, social media, email marketing, print, and the creative development process is crucial. Exceptional communication, relationship-building, influencing, and analytical skills are required, as this individual will serve as a brand champion throughout the organization.
This role involves collaborating with a team of in-house graphic designers, copywriters, and external agencies as needed, with a focus on enhancing efficiency and quality. The Creative Director will also be responsible for executing designs and assets, including but not limited to: proof of concepts with asset mock-ups, a brand guideline book, campaign playbooks, and other high-visibility materials across all channels. A strong design background and a hands-on approach to creating inspirational and brand-centric work are vital. This individual will proactively partner with various stakeholders to bring the brand to life through compelling copy and stunning design, ensuring a consistent voice that resonates locally.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee and execute design projects from conception to delivery.
- Develop and present creative concepts, delivering comprehensive toolkits, advertising materials, video assets, and more to support initiatives.
- Collaborate closely with Creative Operations, Brand Marketing, and Brand Strategy to ensure alignment of concepts and vision with goals and operational needs.
- Generate innovative ideas to convey concepts and promote products/services.
- Ensure designs are accessible and user-friendly across devices.
- Direct on-set photography and video production as needed.
- Maintain brand consistency throughout all creative projects.
- Engage with various stakeholders to meet expectations.
- Stay informed about industry trends and tools.
Design Leadership:
- Facilitate stakeholder and peer reviews to foster creative trust and understanding.
- Encourage the team to advance their ideas and advocate for innovation.
- Establish a culture of inspiration, trust, and creativity.
- Lead creative brainstorming sessions.
Collaboration:
- Work alongside various stakeholders and partners to ensure creative output aligns with business strategy and objectives.
- Promote a culture of respect and transparency.
- Collaborate closely with Design, Copy, and Production Leads to ensure alignment of concepts and brand development with operational design and copy needs.
Design Strategy:
- Incorporate performance and user testing data into design decisions.

Required Qualifications:
- 5+ years of experience in a senior creative leadership position.
- Exceptional problem-solving skills with the ability to identify core issues and provide insightful creative solutions.
- Detail-oriented, highly motivated, and results-driven.
- A portfolio showcasing completed design projects.
- Expert proficiency in design software, including Figma and Adobe Creative Suite.
- Extensive experience in design, particularly in digital formats.
- Proven track record of delivering outstanding results with a focus on flawless creative output and innovative, strategic approaches that foster brand loyalty and strong customer engagement.
- Strong aesthetic sensibility with a refined understanding of colors, fonts, layouts, and compositions.
- Meticulous attention to detail.
- Ability to meet deadlines and collaborate effectively with a team.
- Capability to articulate and rationalize design concepts and processes.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in motion design.
- Previous work in eReading, eCommerce, retail, entertainment, or software sectors.
