Position Overview:
As an Occupational Therapist I, you will play a crucial role within the Halvar Jonson Centre for Brain Injury, under the guidance of the Unit Manager. Your primary responsibility will be to deliver a comprehensive range of therapeutic services focused on enhancing self-care, productivity, and leisure activities for patients.
Working collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team, you will assess, plan, and execute client-centered treatment strategies tailored for individuals with acquired brain injuries.
Your duties will encompass evaluating and recommending adaptive devices, including wheelchairs, seating systems, and upper extremity orthotics. Additionally, you will engage with patients who exhibit behavioral challenges, ensuring their needs are met effectively. You will also oversee the activities of therapy assistants assigned to support your caseload management.The Halvar Jonson Centre for Brain Injury is a 48-bed facility dedicated to providing exceptional care for individuals with acquired brain injuries through a collaborative approach.
This program is dynamic and continually evolving, with a strong commitment to professional growth and excellence.Key Responsibilities:
As an Occupational Therapist, you will deliver evidence-based services aimed at optimizing occupational performance to meet the diverse needs of individuals, groups, or communities.
Your role may involve serving as a direct service provider, consultant, educator, or advocate, functioning as an essential member of the healthcare team.
You will engage with clients, families, and communities to facilitate meaningful participation in self-care, productivity, and leisure activities.Your support will empower clients to achieve their highest functional potential and independence, considering their cognitive, emotional, spiritual, and physical strengths and limitations.
As part of your responsibilities, you will provide a full spectrum of services, including triage, screening, consultation, assessment, diagnosis, collaborative goal setting, treatment, prevention, self-management, education, case management, referral, transition support, and collaboration with relevant stakeholders within the client's environment.
Clients and families will be integral members of the healthcare team, and you will encourage their active involvement in all aspects of care.
You will work alongside clients and families to determine, implement, and evaluate rehabilitation strategies.Participation in various interprofessional teams will be essential to enhance awareness, improve support, and engage in quality improvement initiatives by collaborating with healthcare providers, patients, families, and other stakeholders to advance client services.
You will also contribute to quality improvement efforts and your professional community, engaging in peer mentoring and supervising students. Clinical supervision of Therapy Assistants and Therapy Aides may also be part of your role.Qualifications:
To qualify for this position, you must have completed a bachelor's degree in Occupational Therapy from an accredited university program and be registered with the Alberta College of Occupational Therapists (ACOT).
Additionally, you should possess excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills. CPR certification is required – BLS for Health Care Providers Level C. You must be physically capable of performing the duties associated with this position, which may involve assisting patients with various functional tasks. This role requires managing patients with complex moderate to severe brain injuries who may require significant support.
Experience in neurology, particularly with stroke and brain-injured patients, is preferred, along with a minimum of three years of clinical experience in rehabilitation services utilizing a client-centered approach.
