Job Overview

As a Tele-Interviewer/Underwriter, you will play a critical role in supporting Wawanesa's success by coordinating and conducting medical interviews with clients applying for life insurance. You will review and assess the risk of life and living benefits insurance applications, collecting confidential information about clients' medical and non-medical history. Your expertise in underwriting will enable you to determine an applicant's insurability using online and internal tools.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Conduct recorded tele interviews and document answers, demonstrating active listening skills and applying underwriting knowledge to deliver exceptional customer experiences.
  2. Review individual life insurance applications and underwriting requirements to evaluate the degree of risk involved through assessment of an individual's medical history, habits, occupational hazards, financial background, insurable interest, and other pertinent information.
  3. Select and classify risks according to company and reinsurance underwriting guidelines, ensuring compliance with all legislation and consumer regulation.
  4. Develop and maintain a strong working knowledge of company underwriting guidelines, workflow, and business rules to properly refer cases to reinsurers, order additional underwriting requirements, and refer cases to senior underwriters for review.
  5. Maintain accurate records of decisions made and ensure completeness of policy data.
  6. Work effectively towards team goals and provide excellent customer service, building positive relationships with internal and external clients.
  7. Meet or exceed company service standards.
  8. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  1. One (1) year's experience in Life and/or Living Benefits is required.
  2. Experience in medical interview or a call centre or a customer service environment.
  3. Post-secondary education or related business/field experience.
  4. Actively working towards or completion of FALU is required.
  5. Actively working towards or completion of FLMI is required.
  6. Strong knowledge of human anatomy, medical terminology, diseases, tests, and treatments.
  7. Strong knowledge of non-medical risk factors (e.g., occupation, avocation, etc.).
  8. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite is required.
  9. A commitment to continuous learning and personal development is required.
  10. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to select and implement best solutions.
  11. Comfortable working under pressure in a high volume, fast-paced environment and handling stressful situations in a professional manner.
  12. Strong time management and organization skills with the ability to establish priorities and meet Company service standards, while being flexible in times of pressure and change.
  13. Ability to contribute to a positive and collaborative work atmosphere.
  14. Strong communication skills, both written and oral, with the ability to communicate at the right level for the audience.
  15. Excellent attention to detail with the ability to review information carefully and comprehensively.
