Job Overview

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a highly skilled Registered Nurse who has undergone extensive educational training and possesses the expertise to independently assess, order and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe medications, and execute specific procedures within the scope of practice defined by legislation. This role integrates clinical diagnostic and therapeutic knowledge within a nursing framework that prioritizes holistic care and collaboration with patients, families, and communities.

The Nurse Practitioner employs a robust theoretical knowledge base and advanced clinical skills to provide care for patients in palliative settings, both inpatient and outpatient, in partnership with physicians and a multidisciplinary team. Responsibilities include conducting thorough health assessments, managing symptoms through a variety of therapeutic approaches, and ensuring compassionate care for terminally ill patients and their families. The NP is also tasked with developing and implementing comprehensive care plans, offering family counseling, and providing support to staff.

Required Qualifications

  • Active registration in the Extended Class (NP-Adult) with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing is mandatory.
  • A minimum of three years of nursing experience in palliative care is essential.
  • In-depth knowledge of palliative care practices and pain management is required.
  • Formal training in Palliative Care, including completion of the LEAP Course.
  • Experience in palliative and end-of-life care, pain management, and supporting individuals with complex medical needs is advantageous.
  • Preference for candidates eligible for cross-appointment to an academic institution.
  • Membership in relevant professional organizations such as NPAO and RNAO is preferred.
  • A creative, innovative, and professional demeanor is expected.
  • Proven ability to manage and prioritize multiple responsibilities effectively.
  • Capability to work independently.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Visio.
  • Ability to fulfill the physical demands of the role.
  • A satisfactory record of employment and attendance is required.

Additional Information

Employment Status: Temporary Full-time

Work Hours: Various rotating shifts, subject to operational needs.

Compensation: Competitive hourly wage based on experience.
