About this Opportunity

The Business Development Specialist plays a pivotal role in driving Cenovus's growth by identifying and capitalizing on commercial opportunities. This involves originating, negotiating, and implementing deals that align with the company's strategic imperatives. The Specialist will work closely with internal and external counterparts to deliver on business cases, leveraging their influencing, communication, and negotiation skills to drive results.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Develop and implement strategies to identify and pursue commercial opportunities, ensuring alignment with Cenovus's business objectives.
  2. Collaborate with Land A&D and Corporate Development teams to ensure consistent process evaluations and standards of analysis.
  3. Provide market intelligence on transactions, industry activity, and capital markets, informing business development decisions.
  4. Present opportunity analysis and recommendations to leaders, driving informed decision-making.
  5. Craft financial analyses to assess risks and opportunities for various inorganic strategic scenarios.
  6. Facilitate area-based inorganic reviews to make portfolio recommendations, including development, operations, A&D, and land strategies.
  7. Negotiate with external parties to initiate and review commercial alternatives that support business strategy and corporate priorities.
Requirements

We're seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional with a strong background in business development, commercial deal-making, and strategic growth. The ideal candidate will possess:

  • 12+ years of proven experience in business development, commercial deal-making, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead commercial deals and implement new business opportunities from initial project justification to investment decision readiness.
  • Strong business, commercial, and financial acumen, with the ability to negotiate successfully in high-impact scenarios.
  • Strategic thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to redefine ideas into actionable work plans and drive cross-functional team alignment.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to advocate for ideas and tailor messaging to diverse audiences.
