Supervision: Reports to the Unit Manager/Director of Care

Supervisory Duties: Oversees Health Care Aides (HCAs)

Qualifications:

  • Completion of an accredited Licensed Practical Nursing program is mandatory.
  • Relevant clinical experience in the nursing field is preferred.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

Must maintain good physical and mental health, with the ability to perform moderate to heavy physical tasks. Strong communication skills are essential.

Licensure and Certifications:

Must hold a valid registration with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Manitoba (CLPNM) and maintain current Family & Friends registration at the Targeted Responder Level.

Language Proficiency:

Excellent command of the English language, both spoken and written, is required.

Knowledge Base:

  • Familiarity with the Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics for Licensed Practical Nurses.
  • Understanding of the Licensed Practical Nurses Act and relevant health care policies.
  • Knowledge of nursing care principles related to the clinical area.
  • Awareness of health information legislation and workplace safety protocols.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Effective communication and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and delegate care appropriately.
  • Capacity to adapt to changing situations and manage multiple demands.
  • Competence in working independently and as part of a health care team.

Core Responsibilities:

Under the general supervision of the Director of Care, the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is tasked with delivering professional nursing services to residents. This includes:

  • Conducting assessments to identify health care needs.
  • Developing and implementing individualized care plans.
  • Administering prescribed treatments and medications.
  • Collaborating with the health care team to ensure comprehensive resident care.
  • Documenting care provided and monitoring resident progress.

Leadership and Communication:

The LPN plays a key role in facilitating communication among residents, families, and health care professionals to ensure effective care delivery. Responsibilities include:

  • Participating in interdisciplinary team meetings.
  • Providing guidance to junior staff and health care aides.
  • Maintaining professional boundaries and therapeutic relationships with residents.

Professional Development:

Commitment to ongoing education and improvement of clinical skills is essential. The LPN is expected to:

  • Engage in professional development activities.
  • Act as a mentor for new staff and students.

Additional Duties:

May be required to assume the role of Nurse-in-Charge in the absence of a Registered Nurse, ensuring continuity of care and safety protocols are followed.
