Position OverviewThe Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure is responsible for planning and enhancing transportation systems, constructing new facilities, providing transportation services, and executing transportation policies to ensure the safe and efficient movement of individuals and goods.
The Area Manager plays a crucial role in delivering exceptional customer service to the motoring public and maintaining a dependable transportation network. Collaborating with the Operations Manager, the Area Manager serves as the local ministry representative on highway operations within their designated area.
Establishing strong working relationships with Road and Bridge Maintenance Contractors, along with effective communication with the public, elected officials, regulatory bodies, and other ministry personnel, is vital for this role. Area Managers are tasked with planning, organizing, and executing various road rehabilitation and enhancement projects in alignment with other ministry initiatives. Given the unpredictable nature of road-related emergencies, Area Managers must provide immediate guidance and oversight to ensure public safety, infrastructure integrity, and environmental protection.

Qualifications- Professional Engineer with one (1) year of relevant experience; OR
- University or college degree in a related discipline with one (1) year of relevant experience; OR
- Diploma from a recognized Institute of Technology in a related field with three (3) years of relevant experience; OR
- Secondary school graduation (or equivalent) with a minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience.
Relevant fields of study include civil engineering, structural engineering, construction technology, surveying, geology, geography, or project management.
Relevant experience encompasses:
- Highway construction and/or maintenance
- Project management
- Contract management
- Traffic management
- Surveying
- Auditing processes, procedures, and practices
- Valid Class 5 BC Driver's license in good standing
- Completion of Road Area Manager Certificate through BCIT (or another technical institution) is required.
Note: The Area Manager Certificate of Completion through BCIT (or another Technical Institution) is necessary for full-level appointment. Successful candidates who have not obtained this certificate must do so within one year and will be appointed at the AO 21 level until completion.

- The transportation sector
- Stakeholder engagement
- Contract management
- Willingness to navigate steep slopes and structures.
- Able to respond to emergencies at any time.
- Capable of working in hazardous conditions.
- Willing to obtain Area Manager's Roads Certification within one year of appointment.

- Willingness to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
