- Survival equipment and satellite communications provided with the vehicle.
Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure (MTI) is seeking for Winter Roads Inspectors for the 2024/25 Winter Roads season. These positions work on the MTI Winter Roads network in some of the most remote and beautiful places in Manitoba.

The winter road system consists of over 2300 km of temporary roads over land and ice that enable over 3000 annual loads of critical freight to reach 21 remote communities in Manitoba during the winter season.
Successful applicants may be recalled for future seasons.
Conditions of Employment:
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
- Must be able to work in remote and isolated communities for extended periods of time.
- Must have a Valid Class 5 Driver's licence.
- Must be able to work additional overtime hours (including evenings and weekends) with overnight stays (possibly in a camp environment).
- Must be able to travel to worksites by both ground and air transportation.
- Must be able to work in an outdoor rough terrain environment.
- Must be able to wear Personal Protective Equipment.
- Must be physically capable of performing all of the required job duties (lifting/carrying 0-25 kg, walking on rough terrain, sitting and standing for prolonged periods, climbing stairs and ladders, crouching, kneeling, bending, twisting, operating vehicles and wearing personal equipment.
Qualifications:
Essential:
- Completion of a Civil Engineering Technology Diploma or completion of Department Level 2 training courses. A combination of education and work experience may be considered.
- Good written communication skills with ability to complete daily diary, work sheets and/or reports.
- Experience with Power Tools (Chainsaw, ice auger, snowmobile, ATV).
- Knowledge of workplace health and safety and environmental issues.
Desired:
- Related winter road inspection experience will be an asset.
- Experience working with Indigenous people including experience working with the culture, traditions and leadership styles is an asset.
**Duties**:
Winter Roads Inspectors report to the Winter Roads Project Managers, and act as the on-site inspection for the construction and maintenance of winter roads. Duties include roadway inspection and reporting, placing and removing signs, and using ground-penetrating radar for ice measurements. Inspectors are to maintain a good working relationship with First Nation contractors and assist with any questions or concerns of the trucking and traveling public. Duties include but are not limited to:
- Inspects and monitors winter roads construction operations to ensure Department specifications are met, reports contractor’s progress to Winter Road Project Manager and initiates stop work orders in imminent danger situations. (i.e. verbally initiates work stoppage for safety related issues).
- Determines ice bearing capacity by measuring ice thickness and inspecting ice quality, and provides recommendations to the Winter Road Project Manager for opening the winter road(s).
