Job Summary
The Asphalt Raker Labourer is a key member of our road construction team, responsible for redistributing asphalt mix correctly as it leaves the screed and preparing it for rolling. This role requires a high level of proficiency in asphalt raking techniques and a strong understanding of road paving construction methods and materials.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assess road conditions and job requirements to ensure efficient and effective asphalt raking.
- Spread asphalt with a rake using efficient techniques and maintain a good pace to meet project deadlines.
- Ensure proper hand raking of longitudinal seams and transverse joints to achieve a smooth surface with minimal segregation.
- Shovel excess asphalt and sweep up debris to maintain a clean and safe work environment.
- Responsible for the proper match points and limits of asphalt mix adjacent to concrete structures, manholes, water valves, and other fixtures within the road surface.
- Use an asphalt rake to blend and level any seams in the mat, reducing visible marks and seams in the asphalt surface.
- Measure the width of the road using a measuring tape and string line the boundaries of the road surface as a guide for the paver.
- Assist the screed operator with even distribution of asphalt materials over the road surface.
- Verify, estimate, and set the angle and depth of the asphalt screed as required.
- Signal operators of construction equipment to facilitate alignment and movement of materials.
- Ensure the worksite is organized and free of clutter, rubble, and garbage.
- Shovel asphalt mix into areas inaccessible to paving machines and compact mix using rakes and hand tampers.
- Perform a variety of manual labor tasks, including the use of power and hand tools.
- Complete a variety of other general labor tasks, such as cleaning and preparing sites.
- Operate equipment, such as pneumatic hammers, vibrators, tampers, and skid steer as needed.
- Other duties as required.
Qualifications
Work Experience
- Minimum 1 – 5 years of experience in road construction.
- Minimum 1 – 3 years of experience as an Asphalt Raker.
Technical Skills
- Understanding of asphalt raking techniques.
- Knowledge of road paving construction methods and road construction materials.
Working Conditions
- Travel as required.
- Overtime as required.
- Use of personal protective equipment is required.
- Must comply with the company's drug and alcohol policy, including testing requirements.
- Must comply with all company policies.
- Must be able to work respecting safety policies and procedures. Perform duties safely around mobile equipment and have a high sense of safety awareness while performing work on the roads.
- Use of sunscreen, long sleeves, and appropriate headgear is recommended.
- Must be physically able to repetitively lift and carry at least 50lbs on a regular basis.
- Work is performed in an outdoor setting, which could include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust and asphalt.
