Contract Position

The Wellness Promoter operates under the supervision of the Mental Health Capacity Building School Coordinator and collaborates with a representative from the school division, while closely engaging with the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) Provincial Mental Health Capacity Building (MHCB) representative. This role is integral to a team dedicated to achieving the goals of the Mental Health Capacity Building (MHCB) initiative. These goals are accomplished through the creation and implementation of developmentally suitable, evidence-based programs tailored for children, youth, and families. The Wellness Promoter is expected to allocate 80% of their working hours in direct interaction with children, youth, school personnel, or parents.

Key Responsibilities:

Program Development and Delivery
  • Design, promote, and implement universally accessible mental health promotion initiatives for various group sizes in educational and community environments;
  • Concentrate on enhancing knowledge, skill-building, and fostering capabilities that empower others to enhance their mental health and wellness;
  • Collaborate with students, division personnel, parents/guardians, and community stakeholders to elevate their understanding and skills regarding mental health and mental illness;
  • Engage with a team comprising school staff, students, parents/guardians, and community members to adapt to the evolving mental health and wellness needs of their community;
  • Establish and nurture strong connections with children, youth, and families, serving as a trusted mental health expert for students, staff, parents/guardians, and community partners;
  • Identify and facilitate access for individuals requiring referrals to specialized mental health and addiction services, as well as other community resources;
  • Collaborate with other MHCB personnel across the province to address challenges and celebrate achievements;
  • Operate under the guidance of the MHCB School Coordinator.
Research and Evaluation
  • Assist in evaluation processes and survey data collection for the MHCB program as mandated by the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA);
  • Ensure all relevant documentation complies with the Health Information Protection Act and the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act;
  • Adhere to the SHA funding agreement requirements.

Qualifications and Experience:

Preference will be given to candidates possessing:

  • A relevant degree, diploma, or certification in health or social sciences (e.g., health promotion, kinesiology, social work, nursing, psychology, public health, or early childhood development) or a suitable combination of education and experience;
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in promotion, prevention, and/or client-focused services related to addictions and mental health;
  • Understanding of mental health and wellness principles, health promotion strategies, and child and youth development;
  • Familiarity with Comprehensive School Community Health;
  • Awareness of the developmental, educational, emotional, social, and recreational needs of children, youth, and families;
  • Creative thinking skills with experience in program delivery, public speaking, and group facilitation;
  • Ability to foster relationships and communicate effectively with diverse age groups;
  • Proven time management skills;
  • Capability to work independently as well as collaboratively;
  • Understanding of personal and professional boundaries;
  • Advocacy skills;
  • Creative problem-solving and decision-making abilities;
  • Experience liaising with community members, school staff, community organizations, and healthcare providers;
  • Awareness of the community's economic, social, cultural, and political landscape;
  • Knowledge of local community resources;
  • Ability to maintain program statistics for evaluation purposes and assist in assessing program effectiveness;
  • Commitment to professional and personal growth;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications;
  • Basic understanding of social media;
  • Ability to sustain a healthy work-life balance;
  • Where applicable, proof of licensure or registration with the appropriate Saskatchewan regulatory college prior to starting duties.
