Wellness Promoter

Contract Position

The Wellness Promoter operates under the guidance of the Mental Health Capacity Building School Coordinator and collaborates with a representative from the school division while engaging closely with the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) Provincial Mental Health Capacity Building (MHCB) representative. This role is integral to a team dedicated to achieving the goals of the Mental Health Capacity Building (MHCB) initiative. The objectives are fulfilled through the creation and implementation of developmentally suitable, evidence-informed programs for children, youth, and families. The Wellness Promoter is expected to dedicate a significant portion of their work hours to direct interactions with children, youth, school personnel, or parents.

Key Responsibilities:

Program Development and Implementation
  • Design, organize, promote, and execute universally accessible mental health promotion initiatives for various group sizes in educational and community environments;
  • Concentrate on enhancing knowledge, skill-building, and fostering capabilities that empower others to enhance their mental health and well-being;
  • Collaborate with students, division personnel, parents/guardians, and community stakeholders to elevate their understanding, skills, and confidence regarding mental health and mental illness;
  • Engage as part of a collaborative team (including school staff, students, parents/guardians, and community members) to identify and adapt to the evolving mental health and wellness needs of their community;
  • Establish and nurture strong connections with children, youth, and families, serving as a reliable mental health resource for students, staff, parents/guardians, and community partners;
  • Identify individuals requiring referrals to specialized mental health and addiction services and other community resources;
  • Collaborate with other MHCB personnel across the province to address challenges and acknowledge achievements;
  • Work under the supervision of the MHCB School Coordinator.
Data Collection and Evaluation
  • Assist in evaluation efforts and survey data gathering for the MHCB program as mandated by the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA);
  • Ensure all documentation adheres to the Health Information Protection Act and the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act;
  • Maintain compliance with SHA funding agreements.

Qualifications and Experience:

Preference will be given to candidates who possess:

  • A relevant degree, diploma, or certification in health or social sciences (e.g., health promotion, kinesiology, social work, nursing, psychology, public health, or early childhood development) or a suitable combination of education and experience;
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in promotion, prevention, and/or client-centered services in addictions and mental health;
  • Understanding of mental health and wellness, health promotion and prevention strategies, and child and youth development principles;
  • Familiarity with Comprehensive School Community Health concepts;
  • Awareness of the developmental, educational, emotional, social, and recreational needs of children, youth, and families;
  • Creative thinking abilities with experience in program delivery, public speaking, and group facilitation;
  • Strong relationship-building skills and positive communication with all age groups;
  • Proven time management capabilities;
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively;
  • Understanding of personal and professional boundaries;
  • Advocacy skills;
  • Creative problem-solving and decision-making abilities;
  • Experience liaising with community members, school staff, community organizations, and healthcare providers;
  • Knowledge of the community's socio-economic, cultural, and political landscape;
  • Familiarity with local community resources;
  • Capability to maintain program statistics for evaluation purposes and assist in assessing program effectiveness;
  • Commitment to ongoing professional and personal development;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications;
  • Basic understanding of social media;
  • Ability to maintain a healthy work-life balance;
  • Where applicable, proof of licensure or registration with the appropriate Saskatchewan regulatory college prior to starting duties.
