Director of Quality Assurance and Compliance Programs

Reporting directly to the Chief Safety Officer, the Senior Director of Quality Assurance (Programs & Compliance) will collaborate closely with Operations and the Quality team to oversee and direct the quality, food safety, and regulatory compliance for all production facilities under Sofina Foods in Canada. This role encompasses the alignment of policies and standards, as well as the assessment of effective implementation of best practices and compliance with regulatory requirements, including internal and external audit programs, MOP, USDA regulations, Animal Care, and BRC standards.
This individual will champion the Company's vision for quality and food safety while providing robust support to the Safety & Quality Management function. Working in full alignment with Sofina's Operations and Safety & Quality teams, this role ensures that all activities effectively promote the success of the plants.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee the quality, food safety, and regulatory policies and programs, providing essential technical expertise and support to the organization;
- Lead the development and ownership of both short and long-term objectives for Quality & Safety that align with business goals and regulatory updates;
- Maintain an up-to-date and comprehensive understanding of existing regulations, customer requirements (quality/food safety), BRC or industry standards, and communicate changes effectively to minimize operational disruptions;
- Offer expert technical, regulatory, and animal health/welfare guidance to management teams;
- Collaborate with Operations and QA Directors to instill a culture of quality responsibility among all employees, fostering a 'behavior-based' compliance environment;
- Direct and enhance continuous improvement initiatives for food safety standards and practices across Sofina, benchmarking against industry best practices in North America to identify gaps and opportunities for improvement;
- Build and maintain relationships with senior CFIA leaders, representing the Company as a technical expert in discussions with CFIA, Agriculture Canada, Health Canada, and other industry associations;
- In partnership with the Director of Quality Assurance & Food Safety, ensure facilities are well-prepared for audits (e.g., BRC, Section 4, Costco, USDA), effectively safeguarding the company's interests through timely follow-up on corrective actions and preventative measures from audit findings.
- Bachelor's degree (BSc.) in a relevant field such as Agriculture, Animal Science, Microbiology, or Chemistry;
- A minimum of 10 years of experience in quality and food safety roles within the poultry processing industry, including egg hatching and poultry production, with at least 5 years in a management capacity;
- Expert-level technical and regulatory knowledge in microbiology, food and/or meat science, and animal care requirements related to poultry and pork production;
- Proven experience in leading QA management teams, including senior-level managers;
- Demonstrated ability to represent the company’s position and technical information effectively;
- Strong communication skills for presenting science-based, technical, and regulatory positions internally and externally, influencing and challenging existing practices and regulatory directions as necessary;
- Familiarity with BRC (British Retail Consortium) standards and HACCP implementation at various operational levels;
- Extensive knowledge of quality management systems and auditing processes;
- Understanding of the Food Safety Enhancement Program (FSEP);
- Exceptional presentation skills for both small and large audiences;
- Proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
